Saturday, February 15, 1992 @ Basking in the glow af God How adept most modern politicians are at avoiding mention of what is bound to be seen as offensive by the elec- torate. It is obviously so much easier to engage in safe talk. How very different it was with Jesus Christ already at the beginning of His Public Ministry when He preached to that hometown congregation at Nazareth! It was more than a little offensive for those folks when Jesus, known to them as “Joseph’s kid,” identified Him- self as the expected Messiah. That news might have been more acceptable had our Lord appeared in blue tights with a flowing red cape. It was that external ordinariness which provoked such skepticism. The offensive level for these people really rose, however, when Jesus pointed out that the grace of God extended far beyond the boundaries of these descendants of Abra- ham. Even among the most liberal minded people today, the grace of God would seem to have certain limits. mB Pulpit & Pew - St. Peter Lutheran Church Rev. Glen BACKUS The elder brother in that fa- miliar parable was not all pleased when the younger son in that household was the re- cipient of his father’s forgiving embrace. It was highly offen- sive that such grace should be extended to that young man who had so freely given him- self over to a season of profli- gate living. “This man eats with sin- ners!” the shocked Pharisees complained of Jesus. Never mind the real truth that Jesus was not thereby condoning sin but rather seeking to reach down to the very lowliest with God’s underserved love. I remember a youth cate- chumen in one of my classes becoming highly incensed when I pointed out that there was more than enough grace of God to take care of the sins of that notorious rapist and murderer, Ted Bundy. Of course, that grace still has to be taken by the individual with the hand of penitential faith . . . yet, the very idea seemed offensive. However scandalizing the Gospel of Jesus Christ might be for some people, it is in that very offensiveness that we sin- ners can find our hope for for- giveness and eternal rescue. No matter how great the need for deliverance, in Jesus Christ, we haye a deliverer who is always greater! As Paul the apostle put it: “Where sin increased, grace which has \ been shining forth from Jesus Christ as portrayed in the se- lected Gospel Lessons during EST CASTLEGAR KIWANIS CLUB - CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Nominations will be received until Feb. 29/92 Address nominations to: Castlegar Kiwanis Club P.O.
