But there are those who have been disposed to take advantage of good will, and have carried the matter to such a stage that the subscription list has become more regu‘ar than the mail service. Business men propose that it shall cease, or, at least, be modified. Unfortunately, the practice is to besiege the same class of men for whatever cause, re- gardless of personal interest or ben- efit. This has become: so common that a day does not pass in which demands are not made, so that mer- chants and others have come to the conclusion that their business ef- forts are being devoted more to pleasure and plenty for others than themselves. Worse still, the men with public spirit are the ones who always suffer, and it matters not hhow much they have contributed to previous lists, they are eternally damned by some clique or faction if they refuse to lend their aid to any causé in which they have not the remotest interest. Business men propose to to stop it. They have been easy victims in the past, and. while they avill never siurk any responsibility where charity, want or public good are concerned, they do not propose to provide ‘pleasures and trivial and disappointed were | fortunate in having the Trades and.
