layers are unemployed this year. Guys like Silck

expansion due in the NBA next year, some of these
fine players will get a second lease.on life in the pros
while others like Ron Behagen will opt for the big
money and abbreviated schedule in the European
feagues...By the way, the current NBA season is
three weeks shorter than last year's sked. The
Championship Series is scheduled to end on May
20... The new three-point field goal is being used by
all of the NBA squads, but at a lowly 26.1% success
rate... Early favorite for NBA's Most Valuable Player
has to be the 76ers’ Jullus Erving. He's playing like
a man possessed... The major networks have
more inclined to televise New York Jets and Giants
games the last few weeks since both teams have
shown a_ marked improvement —_on_ .the
gridiron... From what | understand, Lake Placid, N.Y.,
site of the 1980 Olympics, is being stowly transformed
into an armed camp. There's been talk of turning the
Olympic Village housing facilities into a minimum
security prison, so most of the, sophisticated warning
devices that are being installed against terrorists will
be put to good use after the games.

Wooden Skis

If you haven't already
done so (and it's advisable to
do so at the end of cach ski
season) remove old wax from.
the skis with the aid of a torch
or spray Wax-remover, and a

be new, sandpaper off the
layer of dark sealer used by
manufacturers to protect the
ski base during transport and
storage. Once you’ve remov-
ed the factory coating, apply a
thin layer of pine tar to seal
the wooden fibres against ex-
cessive moisture.

Then carefully heat the
tar with a torch, so that it
bubbles. Clean off the excess
with a rag and heat. Pine tar
will also protect the base
against excessive wear by ice
and improve wax adhesion.

Synthetic Skis

Remove old wax if nec-
essary. Check bases for goug-
es and repair with synthetic
materials available from your
local ski shop. Epoxy glues
are handy for any cratches or
cracks along the laminates.

screws, bent or cracked bails,
or bent sidewalls. Replace or
straighten bails or bindings if
required. Add epoxy glue to
loose screws holding bindings
to synthetic skis. This vir-
tually guarantees that your
harnesses will not come out of

competitive curling in the
West Kootenays, Labatt’s
has sponsored a new curling
league, the Labatt’s West
Kootenay Zone League.

The league will run a
series of five mini cash spiels
throughout West Kootenay
. curling centres, Participating
teams must play in a min-
imum of three'spiels to qual-
ify. Teams playing in more
‘than three mini spiels may
use their three best spiels to
qualify. -

The league will be run on
a won-loss percentate format.
The top four teams within
the league gain berths in the
West Kootenay zone play-
