This is the latest project going shead in the company’s $700 million mod- ernization and expansion pro- am, In making the announce- ment the company through project supervisor Jim De- Long stated this project will tie in with other moderni- zation projects to improve productivity and will also bring benefits: in environ- menial control by eliminating a dust problem and improv- ing water effluent quality. Zinc oxjde fume is an im- portant source of zinc at the Trail metallurgical oper- ations. It is recovered as a result of slag fuming, which involves resmelting the slag from the lead smelter and re- covering the metals (mainly zine) in the slag. At separate section of the zinc electrolytic plant for the electrolysis stage of zinc pro- duction, The zinc fume leach project involves construction of a slurry preparation facility outside the lead smelter where a process developed by Cominco's technical re- search staff at Trail will separate the chlorine and fluorine from a water slurry of fume. The slurry will be pumped by underground pipeline to a new liquid-solid separation plant between the zine sulphide leaching plant and the zinc pressure leach- ing plant. Eventually, every- thing will be handled through the sulphide leaching circuit and there will be a common solution for electrolysis. In Ociober, demolition work and re-routing of rail lines and pipelines begin in present, zinc oxide fume, as a white. powder, is transported by rail car to zinc operations. Because of impurities (mainly fluorine and chlorine) in this material, it must go through a process separated from the main zine produc- tion circuit. It has to be pro- cessed at the zine oxide leaching plant and requires a for the project. DeLong said the construction workforce is expected to peak next spring with a crew of about 70-80, and comple- tion is scheduled for next fall. DeLong is the operating rep- resentative for the project, Doug Hall is project super- intendent and Keith McDon- ald is construction superin- tendent.
