I felt inadequate and apprehensive. I tried unsuccessfully to feel adventurous and excited about Canada, but being a careful person, I have never been comfortable stepping into the unknown. All I could think of was the small country where I used to live: Greece. Everything was so different here! It was not long before I found a small coffee shop near the airport, and finding it pleasant, went in and ordered lunch in hesitant English. I noticed with a pang that several people seemed to be staring at me, especially a group of people about my age sitting at a booth near mine. Indignant, I stared back at them with intensity, wishing I knew what made me look so different from the others. Finally, looking faintly embarassed, a pretty blond girl ventured from their booth and extended her hand. “Hi,” she said, “My name is Sheila Aman. You must be new here; I haven't seen you around here before.” I smiled uncertainly and told her my name, Christina Saffelopulous, and that I was nineteen years old and had come all the way from Greece to Canada to get a university education. “Oh, really?” she said, “Which university are you going to?" a s Edition. So am I.” Sheila introduced me to her friends. They seemed very friendly. “Do you miss Greece?” they asked. I comprehend. tried to “N, I'm not Miss Greece,” I stammered, blushing. The boys at the table howled with laughter while the girls tried politely to hide their smiles. “I'm sorry I confused you, Christina. What I meant was, do you sometimes wish you were back in Greece?” “Yes, I do,” I admitted. “I like it here, but Canada is so different from Greece!” Sheila looked sympathetic “What's it like in Greece?” I told her about the beauty of my homeland, the islands and how the people (and I) loved the sea. “Far out!" said one of the boys. I must have looked confused then, because Sheila quickly explained to me the popular expression. I began to relax at last and when I walked out of the restaurant I couldn't help thinking that Canada was not such a formidable place after all. ‘I ean imagine,” she said. Brother Davadas By SEAMUS DONOHUE {Winner for Kingergarten-Grade 3] Last Christmas I got a new brother. He is from India and his name is Devadas. He is nineteen years old. He and a Canadian boy named Eric were staying with us for two months. Where Devadas comes from there are many pythons and many snakes. When Devadas was little he used to play with snakes. He was playing with a water snake once and it bit him. He thought it was interesting that there weren't as many snakes here. Devadas felt very cold when he first came here because it was so hot in India. He's used to it now. He never wore heavy clothes in India, so he felt like an astronaut when he was getting dressed to go outside. He was amazed at the snow because they don’t have it in the part of India where he comes from. I taught Devadas to make snowballs and how to ski too. He liked it a lot, of course. The food in India is really very spicy. Devadas thought the food here was pretty interesting. He puts chili powder and hot peppers on his food. Devadas likes to eat lots of rice. Devadas really likes animals. In India he has a big turtle. His family has four dogs. There are a lot of parrots. They are not afraid of people. In India, people leave their doors open and the parrots fly in. Devadas teaches the parrots to talk. Devadas felt sad because he missed his pets. The money is different shaped in India. Devadas gave my brother Aaron and me some different coins and a paper rupee. There are a lot of coconut palm trees and a lot of eucalypus trees in India. They are really lovely. In India the trees don't loose their leaves. Devadas thought that the trees here in winter looked dry and lifeless and that our country seemed like another planet. Devadas felt happy to decorate the Christmas tree, because in India his family doesn't celebrate Christmas. We gave Devadas a warm scarf for Christmas. It was Devadas’ first Christmas Pretty soon Devadas and Eric will be going home to their own families. I hope that I will get letters from them. I will write them lots of letters The boy from out of town By CHRIS CRNI [Winner for grades 4-6] In the summer a boy and his family moved to Kelowna from Russia. I went to play with him but he couldn't speak my language. All through the summer I helped him communicate with me. In a few days of working with him, I got him saying some English words The next week I asked him if he would like to go fishing at the lake. He asked his mom. His mom said he could go. When we got there we started to fish. He caught four rainbows and I caught two rainbows and one dollie varden When we got home we cleaned the fish Then him and I went to his house. I brought a game, it was called Monopoly. In a few hours we quit the game. He showed me everything he brought from Russia. There was a hockey puck signed with every Soviet player's name. I thought it was neat. He told me that his name was Boris Ttretiak Then we went to see a movie. He had a hard time understanding the movie because the actors were talking in English. When we got home I told my mom about the monster and how he ate Texas Them my mom asked Boris if he would like to come out for supper with us. When we got home we dropped off Boris at his house. Later the next day I asked him if he would like to go buy some sodas and pops. I bought a strawberry soda and Boris bought a banana soda. From them on we always played together. V.
