o2 Castlegar News November 5, 1986 SPORTS Lions regain competitive spirit By GRANT KERR Canadian Press VANCOUVER — The competitive spirits of the British Columbia Lions have been rekindled by the approaching Canadian Football League playoffs, head coach Don Matthews said Tuesday. The defending Grey Cup ghampions won their second straight game after a four-game losing streak with an emotional 26-20 vietory in Winnipeg last Sunday. They meet the Blue Bombers in a rematch Saturday at B.C. Place Stadium “Playing Winnipeg at this time of year lent itself to making these important games for our team,” Matthews said at his weekly news conference. “There's a strong rivalry between the teams. “We played harder knowing that the playoffs are around the corner. Our-offensive performance really helped the team.” Ladies golf season ends By CHERIE LYONS in-one: Diony McArthur on The ladies of the Castlegar the 17th green; break a and District Golf Club held 100-pin: Genevieve Jackson. their wind-up golf and lunch Club events and tourna. The Lions and Bombers both have 11-@ records — B. Cc. has beaten Winnipeg twice this year — and the Lions can finish second in the Western Division with a win or tie Saturday. Under the new CFL playoff format this year, four teams from the West will qualify for post-season play. A B.G win or tie would allow the Lions to play host to one western semifinal against Winnipeg. with the first place Edmonton Eskimos playing at home against the Calgary Stampeders in the other semi. LOSS COSTLY If the Lions lose their last game, they would drop to fourth place with an 11-7 record, with third being awarded to Calgary on the basis of outscoring B.C. 47-32 after the teams split two regular-season games. Matthews said better protection by the offensive line for quarterback Roy Dewalt was a key to the victory over Winnipeg. He also applauded the blocking of running backs John Henry White and Anthony Parker oi blitzing Bomber linebackers. “Good protection always adds to the quarterback’s con fidence,” Matthews said. “I think it was about this time last year that Roy had some great games and took us all the way to the Grey Cup. “As long as he’s healthy and has an adequate amount of time, he's a dangerous football player.” The Lions will be forced into numerous lineup changes for the next game. Linebacker Kevin Konar (knee ligament damage) and backup receiver Seott Lecky (broken ankle) are out for the rest of the season. Konar was injured in Winnipeg and replaced by Bernie Glier, who broke a finger on B.C.'s last defensive play and is doubtful for the rematch. Lecky, a valuable member of the special teams unit, was playing basketball Monday as part of the Lions’ post-game, muscle-stretching routine and broke his ankle. eon Oct. 14. Points of interest for the season were as fol lows: West Kootenay Course Raters, Sue Forrest and Lor retta Bulfone, rated the course from the men’s white tees and came up with a rating of 77.0 for the ladies. This year the ladies took part the provincial Dor- othy Olive Franklin Mem orial Tournament for de- velopment and betterment of junior ladies golf and to com- memorate Franklin's con- tribution to golf at the club, provincial and national levels. The six-foot-four, 250. pounder from the University of Oregon had 13 sacks as a rookie and has seven this season. The signing of Gray by general manager Joe Galat reduces the number of un. signed players to five, in- cluding wide receivers Mervyn Fernandez and Jim Sandusky, running back Keyvan Jenkins, middle line- backer Tyrone Crews and cornerback Keith Gooch, all imports.
