Sandman Inn, a team that dominated the league early in the season, appears to have fallen within reach of the league's lesser lights as they had two hard-fought games against Woodland Park Shell Tuesday and Hi Arrow Monday at the Com munity Complex The 7-7 tie with Shell and 7-5 win over Hi Arrow perhaps indicate that parity is arriving in the CRHL Sandman continues to lead the league with Shell second and Hi Arrow in last, but the gap between the teams has narrowed since the beginning of the season Flu bug With seven skaters against 16 the outcome was predictable as the Castlegar Safeway squad was drubbed 10-3 in Rossland in Pee Wee Housé league action Sunday The first 20 minutes were close and entertaining. Rossland scored first at 5:24 only to have Castlegar's Rob Case tie the game 90 seconds later with an assist from Emmanuel Pacheco. Rossland took the lead at 11:22 but goals 16 seconds apart from Pacheco and Case with assists to Grant Mosby and Brad Coleman gave Castlegar a 3-2 advantage The lead was short-lived as Rossland slipped ahead 4-3 by the end of the first period Then the floodgates opened as Shell could have reduced the gap further had it held on to a 5-0 lead it built over Sandman in the first 10 minutes of the game Tuesday, But Sandman cut the lead to two goals before the period was over Dan Walker scored two goals and picked up one assist in the first period for Shell while Kevin Kirby, Steve Simonen and Joe Bell added singles to give the team the big lead. Sandman’s Mitch Quaedvlieg got one back for his club in the first and then Vince Antignani fired a pair, both assisted by Lorne Anderson and Dave Rugg, in a two-minute span late in the period to pull Sandman within two heading into the second Rigg picked up a goal of his own in the second narrowing the margin to one, but Shell's Kelly Keraiff restored the two-goal lead with seven minutes left in the period. Sandman wasn’t finished yet though as Duane Weir connected to make it 6-5 for Shell heading into the third. In the third it was Sandman’s turn to scored to make it 7-6, Shell’s Bruno Tassone scored with six minutes to go in the game to tie and that’s the way it ended Against Hi Arrow Monday, San dman gave a lesson on building a lead and keeping it as they scored four first period goals and were never headed in a7-5 win. Anderson, with two goals and three assists, and Antignani with one and takes bite out of Rossland-added three goals in the second period and three more in the third to cement the victory Pénalties. also played a part in Castlegar’s demise as they were assessed 21 minutes versus eight for Rossland, Bitten by the cold and flu bug, the Castlegar Atom All-stars dropped two home games to Beaver Valley by 7-2 and 9-5 scores last weekend Saturday at Pioneer Arena, the All stars, playing without their only goalie and twotop scorers, dropped their first game by a respectable 7-2 score. Yount, the last remaining major free agent, decided to stay with the Brewers, agreeing Tuesday to a three-year contact worth about $9.6 million US. Hubie Brooks, another free agent, seems ready to leave Montreal. He rejected the Expos’ offer of salary arbitration and appears certain to go somewhere else. Free agents who had been. offered salary arbitration had until mid- night to accept or reject. Even if they just said no, they have until Jan. 8 to re-sign with their clubs Sid Fernandez, a year away from free agency, joined the big-money Mets starting pitchers, agreeing to a three-year contract worth $6.05 million. Jesse Orosco, who used to pitch for New York, was rewardedby Cleveland with a new option year for 1992 worth $1.075 million. Yount, the American League most valuable player, accepted Milwaukee's offer of salary arbitration and then agreed to terms. He can become a free agent again after the 1992 season. “I'm delighted to sign with the team I’ve played for throughout my entire career and I’m especially grateful for all the Milwaukee and Wisconsin fan support the past two months as well as during my 16 years in Milwaukee,"’ Yount said in a statement EVANSSAYSNO Houston’s Dan Schatzeder and Boston’s Greg Harris were the only other free agents to accept salary arbitration. Craig McMurtry turned down Texas, Carmen Castillo rejected Minnesota, Joel Youngblood did not accept Cincinniati’s offer and Darrell Evans rejected an offer from Atlanta. Brooks has indicated all along that he would not return to the Expos Los Angeles and Detroit are among the teams interested in signing him Yount, 34, was wooed by many clubs, including the California Angels and Toronto Blue Jays. The Angels, who signed free-agent left-hander Mark Langston to a five-year, $16-million contract on Dec, 1, were said to be ready to offer Yount even more. x Yount, a two-time MVP in the 1980s, made $1.1 million last season. “I'm looking forward to being with the Brewers for the next three years in our effort to win a world championship,"’ Yount said Yount. began his career in 1974 with the Brewer: season, he batted .318 with 21 home runs and 103 RBIs.
