FEDERAL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT BANK Interest-free loans offered to student entrepreneurs Submitted For the 10th consecutive year, the Student Business Loans pro- gram is offering $3,000 interest- free loans to student entrepreneurs. The program, run by the Fed- eral Business Development Bank in collaboration with Human Resources Development Canada, is giving hundreds of students the chance to launch suminer businesses, create their own jobs and earn money for their studies. One such student, 19-year- old Kate Hennessy of Galiano Island, launched her own busi- ness renting ocean kayaks and offering kayak lessons and tours. Hennessy created three jobs last summer, and is antic- ipating increased business this summer with more tours already booked. “It’s not easy finding a sum- mer job on the island,” says Hen- nessy. “It's more fun to work for yourself than it is to work at something you don't like.” Hennessy, who is studying anthropology at the University of British Columbia, says, “I've learned a lot—to write my busi- ness plan, I had to figure out what contracts I could get, how many people I thought would kayak and how many people I would need to hire.” She adds, “It takes a lot of preparation to start up a business like this.” The popularity and effective- ness of the Student Business Loans program continue to increase. Last year, 1,288 loans were provided to students for $3.5 million. This represents a 13 per cent increase in the number of loans provided over the previous year and a 15 per cent increase in the amount authorized. In 1994, Student Business Loans recipients created a total of 2,747 jobs—13 per cent more than the previous year. Last year, in B.C., 160 loans for a total of $452,000 were provided. B.C. students created 459 jobs, 29 per cent more than in 1993. The program is open to stu- dents attending a high school, community college or university. »Students must intend to return to school in the fall, and be at least 15 years of . Financing for viable business projects is available on a first- come, first-served basis.
