AUSTRALIAN FEDERATION BILL. Melbourne, Aug. 5.—The discussion of the Australian federation bill in the colonial parliament reveals the exist- ence of an important anti-federal sec- tion. Thecrux of the difficulty is the question of securin, smaller states without depriving the others of the advant: which ehould be theirs from the fact of their large population. ———— The Rossland Laundry will call for your clothes and return them clean and nicely done up. For the finest roams in the city with nee use of baths call upon Mrs. Jennie Stone, The Klondike, top floor Tra- ae block, Columbia avenue and. Lin- coln street; 20-t6 There would be no one to object if the provinciai government give the Nelson & Fort Sheppard railway company all it promised if it woulda stop there. The railroad company is entitled to certain lands taken in alternate sections, but it has not eo taken it. It has simply gone where it pleased, and taken the most valuable lands and left nothing for the people. It is the successful controversy over the illegally taken lands that so de- lights the Rossland Miner. The special from Vancouver to the Recorp which was received last night too late for publication indicates a con- dition there that is surprising. thousand men or more, answer an ad- vertisement for on: hundred men to work on the railroad. It is no wonder the people are going crazy over the Klondike. The people of Vancouver have been regarded in as good or better condition than any town in the west, and it is astonishing to know there are 80 many unemployed there. The only apparent relief is in the mining in- dustry, and the government should en- courage it, by liberal Jaws instead of laying so many burdens upon those who are engaged 1n mining. The Rossland Miner was very anx- ious to get the city printing but is giv- ing the council good grounds for being glad for refusing having anything to do with it. It putsina bill 25 per cent higher, when it does get a notice, than the Recorp charges. ‘The Recorp only charges the city what the government pays throughout the province, which is alow rate. Although the printing was given to the Recorp without stipulated prices the city is being. charged less than the legal rate tn every instance. No Doubt About Great Britian’s Title to the Gold Fields. , Washington, Aug. 4.—Incited by newspaper publications recently tend- ing to throw doubts upon the owner- ship of the Klondike gold fields, some ofthe government officials who would naturally be expected to deal with the question if it comes to a practical issue, have been ,uietly looking into the mat- ter with a view to preparing them- eelves for any controversy that might arise.
