Reflections & recollections ROB TRICKEY: LIFE IN MEXICO Rob Trickey, son of Lorne and Ruth Trickey of Castlegar left for Ciudad del Carmen in southern Mexico where he will spend a year as a Rotary exchange student living with several Mexican host families and attending school in the city. His first Rotary “mother” and “father” were Senor and Senora Ramirez, and his second was Senor Alfonso Calderon. This is Rob's first letter from Mexico to his parents. Personal family references have been edited but Rob's enthusiasm for his new experience and the warmth of his reception comes through strong and clear. Our thanks to Lorne and Ruth for allowing us to use their letter. We would like to send Rob and his Mexican parents and family our most coridal greetings and best wishes. Anyone wishing to write a few lines to Rob will find his current and later addresses at the end of the letter. MOM AND DAD: Hi, how’s it going? Well, it's my first time away from home, how do you like it? Is the food bill cheaper? Is it a lot quieter around the house? I have been here for almost one week now and it is really interesting. When I got off the plane my Rotary “brother” and “sister” were there to meet me, along with my “Aunt” Magaly. They were ‘sleep in a hammock ... it's so hot outside’ smiling and they had open-arms. I didn't meet my Rotary “Mom” and “Dad” until the Aug. 24 (two days later). The family sure makes staying here a lot easier. Gustavo, mi hermano (my brother) is 18 years old and a really neat guy to hang around with. Mi hermana (Martha), is just beautiful. She is 20 years of age and she was the queen of Ciudad del Carmen a couple of years ago. Martha has been helping me a lot with my Spanish None of the family speaks English, which I think is better My mother and father say something in Spanish and it doesn't come out correctly. The house is big but it's missing somethings such as: carpets, toilet seats, and beds. I'm joking the toilet seat was being washed and they offered me a bed, but I replied, “no gracias”. Get this: I sleep in a hammock; it's just great! It's so hot outside that the hammock makes sleeping a lot easier. My brother has a few pets in the yard: four deer, a dozen rabbits, and a baby lamb named Paloma. Lisa would love him ‘because he ig so cute. I register for school on Sept. 4 and I start on the 10th (I think) My Mom just walked in and said to say, Hula, como estan. Nosotors estamos contentos de que tu, Robert este con nosotros I bet you are wondering what that is in English’? Dad, before you read any farther I want you to try and figure it out. Por favor. I can! — Did you figure it out? I thought you would come close. Mom, it means: “Hello, how are you. We are happy to have Robert to stay with us So far I have been to a Mexican wedding and dance It was fun because the majority of the music was in English the girl (bride?) was only 17 or 18 years old. Then on Sunday I found out we have a ranch. It is just huge and has workers living on it, a beach, and a place to have a fiesta. I like it there. Some of the food I don't like very much but I don’t show it. (I suffer). We do have a maid. She comes in on weekdays and stays all day long. There's also another lady who shows up once in a while. I haven't figured out ats ICKEY exchange student yet if she is a maid or not. On Sunday we all (about 20 of us) go out to the ranch and play ball, swim, fish and sit around and eat. We are going to do that every Sunday from now on. T have a lot of amigos such as: Cato, (his real name is Alberto), Yogi (another nickname) and some exchange students from Minnesota. I have a lot more friends than that but those are the main ones right now. I will be back in a minute; I need some water. I bet you never knew how good fresh water (cold) can. taste. There's some real slummy houses around — I can't believe people would live en such places. Oops! A little Spanish slipped out. Dad, you were right about the time. We had a Rotary meeting at 9 o'clock last night — dedicated to us students. We left our house at 9:15 p.m., got there and found nobody there, except for the help. We drove around for awhile, went back at about 9:45 and we were the first ones there. The meeting finally started at 20 minutes after 10. I got up and said something in Spanish. I don't know if I was correct or not but they laughed. This laughing makes me feel more confident here. My Spanish is really coming along, you would be surprised Dad. When I have nothing to do I go upstairs and read some letters that were given to me, listen to tapes that were given to me, and look at pictures that were given to me. It really makes a guy realize how much he is cared for. I quickly get out of that because I hate depression. I'm getting dark. I'm not really in the sun that often. The TV has better English programs than we have st home. Mom, you have to get the Disney channel. You would like all the shows on it. I like it here because everywhere I go I am taller than everybody. I will write again soon. Dad, I don't have a banner to give to their Rotary club, and also send some ideas about what to write to the Rotary Club. Hasta la Vista Reb P.S.
