Over that time, Castlegar will play host to both the Pee Wee Jamboree and the Spokane Tournament. In the Jamboree, some 200 West Kootenay players participating are mixed up and teamed with others they usually compete against. Next weekend, 18 teams will head north from the Lilac City in an exclusive Castlegar- Spokane tournament. Pay a visit to either of our local rinks and give a cheer for the stars of tomorrow. No less than four members of the lo- cal squad will suit up for the West Di- vision at the annu- al classic, and all four are looking forward to it. Joining Grand Forks’ James Scherck and Nel- son’s Pat Gris in net is Rebel Vaughan Welychko, a first- time all star. That’s all you can do.” : ; Like his goalie teammate, right wing Nino Da Costa will be mak- ing his first all-star appearance. . ; Da Costa said he likes the aspect of skating with the league’s elite all on the same ice surface, especially in his home arena. . “You bet,” he said. “It’s sort of fun in a way because you're playing with the best players in the league.” But that doesn’t mean he’s only looking for a good time. “You’re out there to have fun but you always want to win.” isn’t going in thinking like a first-year player. Talotti, Spokane = Admitting that some of his Rebel teammates are hav- ing better seasons, Da Costa said his selection caught him off guard but joked he was cho- sen because he was friends with West Division coach Sam Skinner. “Making the all- star team is some- what of a surprise to me,” he said. “I was telling the guys the only rea- son was probably because Skinner likes me.” Defenceman Neil Schuler will be one of a handful of rookies in the big game, but the 100 Mile House native A late cut of the B.C. Junior Hockey League’s Merritt Centenni- als, Schuler joined the Rebels two games into the season and has made an impact ever since. “My year’s been pretty good, I thought,” he said. “I think I belong (in the all-star game).” As a rookie, Schuler said he’s been studying each team in the league and what works against them but added that he doesn’t know what to expect from the KIJHL's best when they assemble tonight. “It’s hard to say,” he said. “It should be a really good game, but as far as a prediction, I don’t know.” In addition to the all-star game, local hockey fans can look for- ward to a sports memorabilia auction at the Complex today, one that Rebels president Jim Draper said will feature items like auto- graphed sticks from the Vancouver Canucks. Prior to the game, Draper said original Rebels coach and current Minnesota North Stars scout Mark Pezzin will be the guest speaker at the all-star banquet. The Rebels president encourages local hockey fans to participate as much as they can in the all-star festivities. But if time doesn’t al- low it, Draper said seeing the game will more than make up for it. 7 “If you can take in the game, do it,” he said. “It'll be great hockey.
