Ya you dummies how come you didn’t know all that! In other words what our “walking ency clopedia” is saying’ Keep your hose out of our business. We want our own toys. We are in a frenzy so come hell or high water we'll be getting them. We'll move in and mutilate the park very soon now. And don’t try to stop us with any offer of fire protection Probably the first step. will be blowing the $20,000 collected this winter from rate payers, on a discarded fire truck from Ootis- chenia. The Regional District will then swing into action and borrow on our behalf $186,000 at 10 percent interest. The pay back will be $3.19 or better per thousand of your tax assessment for ever. The sad part of all this could THE WINDSHIELD SPECIALISTS All Makes and Models ICBC Claims Gladly Accepted 1 Day Service - Guaranteed 2228 - 6th Avenue, Castlegar, B.c. » 365-7666 have been avoided with a little more effort- from Biyeberry to have fire protection from Castlegar. We could have offered, just for argument sake, $50.00 per dwelling per year. Based on two fires in forty years. Wouldn't that be fair for starters? I'm sure Castlegar fire dept could use extra revenue. It would be a whole lot cheaper for us and we could save our park What we need right now is some common sense not history lessons. Our learned friend from Blue berry puts me in mind of the tourist that stopped a hillbilly along thé road and asked him how far it was to Dallas. Yours sincerely, Bill Gattrell Blueberry Creek Stories on violence have two sides Dear Editor: 1 refuse to just sit back on this one and I am addressing this let- ter to all the Good People of Castlegar and district who read only one-sided stories and then quickly act on them. A guess that the principal of S.H.S.S. was put in a hot seat over this item was a clever one as we were shown the consequences. My 1S year old daughter did not know any other way of showing her hurt and anger against some- one whose mouth was hurting her and the people she cared about Also she did not know how far the vicious mouthed girl would go. Before I say another word though, I will say Yes, my daugh- ter did do’ a wrong, an act which Could cause her to have a crimi- nal record BUT those are the con- sequences many adults face and for the same reason. They don't know how to manage anger. Our story starts before Christ- mas and it actually began with my 14 year old daughter. The girl who was beaten up I will refer to as Beaten. At S.H.S.S. my 14 year old daughter was repeatedly pushed and taunted by Beaten for at least a week or two. We were told that this could have been stopped if we'd have gone to the principal and counsellors with this story. Well folks, let’s be real Nobody wants to be labelled a Rat. My 14 year old daughter did not want to fight—she was even scared to fight and she came home and told me about this and also showed me bruises on her chest that she had gotten as a result of being pushed and pushed. I told her that she didn’t have to take any such behavior like this from anyone and the next time it happened to give Beaten a good backhand. First of all I told her that fighting never proved anything but that some- times we are pushed into a corner and-this~is the last resort. Earlier into the school week, Beaten once again backed my 14 year old into a comer and she received a well deserved slap. Both my daughter and Beaten were sus- pended for one and one half days. On Friday night at the rec centre the pair of girls resolved their dif- ferences once and for all. I was even present because my daugh- ter was scared of her first fight and wanted me to be present to make sure it was a fair one. This was the only answer Beaten could understand Now, 3 months after school started, my 15 year old daughter came back from Prince George to once again live with her mother and sister. Her life was in a bad state and just a week or so before the Violence story in S.H.S.S. she had just gotten out of the Trail Hospital. In a very vulnerable state she went back to school into a specialized program designed for troubled adolescents. Beaten was once again out for trouble and she found it. She opens her vicious mouth and ugly untruths pour owt. My 15 year old daughter told Beaten several times to shut her mouth. She didn't and now my daughter will just have to face life's consequences the hard THE BRITISH COLUMBIA SCHOOL TRUSTEES ASSOCIATION IS IN FAVOUR OF PROVINCIAL BARGAINING way. This act was most definitely not unprovoked. The reason the story in the Castlegar News was so one-sided is because the mother of Beaten held a specialized position with the News and apparently was a prominent citizen. Shegmust have been because she had Principals and teachers and counsellors ‘at S.H.S.S. looking at only the one- sided story and I believe my daughter was not treated fairly and I have counsellors and child care workers who believe also that she was definitely set up as an example. Not wanting names divulged because she was scared of rebuttal is such nonsense because with over 700 hundred students attend- ing S.H.S.S. it is highly unlikely there are few people in Castlegar who don’t know the names of all involved. How silly for her to place scare tactics as a result of released names. Just added juice for readers of the now defunct Castlegar News. Here is just another tidbit. Beaten could not go back to S.H.S.S. because she was. afraid. She could not go to Nelson to school because her big mouth had preceded her. Too many Nelson adolescents wanted to beat her up as well for the same reasons—a vicious mouth. I'll end this saying the only thing worse than being an ago- nized parent is being an agonized adolescent. In the league awards the Bruins had the best coach, the top scorer, best rookie, most valuable Player, the top goalkeeper, the best defenceman and the most sportsmanlike player. “They are a class team, I think we Surprised them,” said Rebels coach, Gary Sauer, following the teams loss in game six of the series. The surprise for the Bruins started in the first game of the series last Tue: jay night when the Rebels scored . two third peri- games loss. The Rebels could not regain the ground lost when the Bruins scored three first period goals, Both teams skated to a scoreless second period and exchanged goals in the third. Mark Graff scored the only marker for the Rebels in the game. Playing a solid game in net for Castlegar Vaughn Welychko kicked: away 43 of the 47 shots fired at him. Corey Flodell and Steve Gropp scored in the second period. Mike Hunter opened up the scoring in the third period and Mark Graff netted the tying goal assisted by Nino DaCosta, his third assist of the night, to force the overtime periods. Although the team lost the opening game they proved they could give their opponents @ tough run for their money. Hoping to avenge the disappointing loss, Castlegar’s next game was on their home ice, Wednesday. Castlegar evened the series up at one game each with the. 5-3 win. Grand Forks built up a two goal fead in the first period with Derek Bird and Travis Hancock scoring. Castlegar tied the game up at two in the second with goals by Darren Pottle and Kevan Rilcof. The Bru- ins jumped ahead with a goal from the stick of Mark Ricci The Rebels were down by one when they started the third period.-But that was a position the Rebels were quick to fix when Pottle netted his second goal of the game to even the score. Kevin Leiman scored what would be the games eventual winner with 5:26 left in the game. Nino DaCosta added some insurance with a goal, assisted by Derek LaLonde and Mark Graff (his third of the game) with 2:36 left to play. P “We got stronger as the game went on. We were fighting from behind and I am happy with tonight's win,” said Sauer following Wednesday night's game Travelling back to Grand Forks, Friday, to play in the “Zoo” (as the Border Bruins home ice is referred to by some of the Castlegar fans) for game three of the series, Castlegar skated to a 4-1 the game. Other Castlegar goals were scored by Mike Hunter and Bill Brewer The series was all tied up at two games each with another trip to play in the Grand Forks zoo, Sunday afternoon, where Castlegar was handed a 10-1 thumping by Grand Forks.’ Dave Dyball scored the teams only goal midway through the third period. Down in the series 3-2, it was a do-or-die situa- tion for the Rebels. If they lost, their season would come to_an end; if they earned themselves a win, they would play a seventh and deciding game in Grand Forks. Castlegar opened the scoring 5:29 into the game when Jesse Oldham parked the puck past Jim Bous- field in the Grand Forks net The Bruins answered the call and scored two of their own later in the first.period. Neither team could beat the Oppositions goalie during the second period Grand Forks extended their lead early in the third, only to have that goal answered by Graff's shot that beat the Grand Forks netminder. Ron Loeffler took out an insurance policy for the Bruins with his goal to make it a 4-2 hockey game. David Burroughs put an end to the pressure from the Rebels who were trying to make a late third period come-back, with a goal ipto the empty Castlegar net from inside his blue line with 15 seconds remaining in the game, and the Rebels season. Penalty problems followed the Rebels throughout the series and Sauer cites ‘the lack of discipline on the part of the players as one of the reasons for the teams losses. “There was discipline lacking. I talked Discipline, Discipline and it did not sink in,” Sauer said follow- ing the teams loss in game six of the series.
