Twenty- thhee members of the Castlegar Pénsioner's Curling Club made the trip and were loud in their praises of the terrific hospital- ity! shown them. % Since Nelson has six sheets oftjce they had invited us to sehd over enough men to fill thbir rink so several members who had not played against Nelson “when. they visited Castlegar took, part. They are “Act Hawkins, Fred Hostetter, Etnie Newman, Mike Verzuh, Bill Waldie and Otto Walker Sr. {The curling was enthusi- agtic and the competition keen. At the social hour that followed the games the Castle- gar boys were “welcomed by Jim Gagnon, president of the Nelson club, A suitable re- sponse of thanks was made for the visitors by Earl Le Roy, vice-president of.the Castlegar Seniors. Our good friend Wally Walper took his trusty, guitar It won't be long until they are. playing. the Brier in London, Ont. and a lot of it including the final round will be shown on television. You can bet on one thing: a lot of curlers who are watching are going to wonder out loud what those guys are doing. That's because of what we call ‘Brier ice’. Even if the ice in London is good by Brier standards, it still won't be the same as the ice.in your curling club. Consequently the curlers are going to do some things at times that will appear strange to you because they are compensating. One thing you will notice, they will seldom play the outside edges of their sheet, and this applies to all five of them. The curlers will tend to play inside out regardless of the along and ined thetboys with a few Western and. Irish songs, delivered as only Wally knows how to do them. Meanwhile, at home, the round robin competition is just past the midway point. At this stage Mike. Verzuh is ahead, his rink even winning out when the maestro himself is unable to be there. However, Earl Le Roy and his boys are right on their tail and the results are still in doubt. Several new faces have been seen around the rink lately, Joe Ulmi, Omar Lightle, George St. Marie (from Gen- elle) and Jack Scott. Welcome aboard boys. ‘That's all for this week. Good luck and ‘Good Curling. In general, the outside ice on both sides of the sheet gets to‘be useless, It gets sugary from‘ condensation with all those people in the arena and the heat of the lights for color television. Once it starts to get that way, the less you use it and as the game progresses, the garbage tends to stick to it. In the Brier the curlers have an abundance of new brooms, so there always seems to be a lot of garbage on the ice, especially late‘in the game, and especially on the outside portions of each sheet. i It gets so that if you see somebody playing the outside, it's a desperation shot. I remember that famous playoff game in the 1956 Brier GOOD CURLING | By Matt Baldwin Sponsored by TREX AUTO BODY AND ENTERPRISES at Moncton between Ane Phillips Sr. of Ontario and Billy Walsh of Manitoba, the only extra end playoff game in Brier history. The winning shot’ by Walsh had to be made on the outside, and he must* have thrown it three times as heavy as normal to make the pass out, to win, and he just barely 1 made it even then. And I've seen situations where there was a Second Se By, Jack Alou! Unlimited” is now. set for April 20, all these classes will run. longer than ‘the | usual six shot sitting right there but it was impossible to throw a rock hard enough to make it. In the early ends, you may see a skip ignore what appears to be a simple draw in favor of a hit because usually arena ice is slow and straight and it is easier to hit than draw, + Late in the game, the ice will change because’ the’ heat will take the pebble off, and the curlers must adjust weight. from end to end, even shot to shot. From what I have heard, things in London ‘should “be better: than normal ‘because their equipment," is. great, providing the man: who ‘is in charge of the ice knows how to use it. He's going to have to’ turn the brine down twice as far as he’s ever done before. But it makes for interest-' ing curling because there are more rocks in play.
