This year, they face guns. The guns are cheap Sat-. urday Night specials, .38s, sawed-off shotguns, .45s, chineguns, even starting pis- tols. Nobody knows how many’ guns are in the hands of the Vancouver underworld, only that there's been a dramatic increase in the number of criminals using firearms, es- pecially when the targets are banks, credit unions and trust companies. Staff St. Dan Kristjanson of the Vancouver police fire- arms section say it is not hard: for criminals to get guns. “The price has really gone down,” Kristjanson says. “Years ago, handguns could be bought on the street for $400 or $500. Today you could get the same gun for about $100 — probably less than it would cost in the store.” Armed robberies now are occurring almost daily in Vancouver. On June 2 alone, three banks were robbed. At the Edelweiss Credit robberies ‘of banks, trust companies and credit unions, For the same period this year 66 per cent of robberies have involved guns, The increases in the total number of holdups is less dramatic but still marked. Nicol says there were 64 holdups on financial institu- tions during. the first. five months of this year, up from 51 for the same period last year. for the staff of the Edel- weiss Credit Union, these statistics mean a more an- xious working day. There were games of cro- quet, lawn darts and zim-zam going on all with June 23 was Awards Day at’ Woodland Park School. Some parents attended the presentation, which was held in the schoo! gymnasium and the following awards were given to students by their classroom teacher. RECESSION BLAMED General manager Herman Riepl says the recession is to blame. “There's no doubt that hard economic times are the reason,” he said in an inter- + view. . “We are seeing the kind of people who don’t have any money and decide to rob a bank... We have cameras that provide sufficient evi- dence at a trial but they just don't care. That's the sur- prising.-part.”, ‘The credit union is the most extreme example of the armed holdups that have pla- gued financial institutions. Vancouver police Insp. Bill Nicol reports that in the first five months of 1981 guns - were used in 15 per cent of amounts of cash in their tills. Riepl hopes this tactic will delay the day when manage- ment is forced to hire armed guards. i “Armed it in- vite a shooting duel,” he says. B.C. Credit Union Reserve Board, says that despite the trend to more firearms, there have been no employees or customers injured in the province during his seven- year stint at the board. Nicol says police have no explanation for the increase in armed robberies, but he doubts whether economic hard times are the cause. “I don’t think it’s a case of an honest man all of a sudden becoming a bank robber,” he says, “It just seems to be a trend that’s developed. We have no magic that says why.” CITY OF CASTLEGAR NOTICE MUNICIPAL PROPERTY TAXES to-wall Since then, more than 300 “people have been slain’ in a bloody battle for control of the extortion rackets that rake in millions of dollars a year and the trade in con- trabant cigarettes and hash- ish in the towns around the These Donald Chow.
