OR OURS" Local Rep: JORGEN MUNCK Phone 354-4973 : a ; student writes. Last September Ken Ross, son of Mr. and Mrs, Ron | .Ross,. left Castlegar for. a year's study in Mexico ‘on te é Rotary 4 1 Student | program aims at,advancing the cause of peace, and igne 3 j to visit, on national by for ® mutual exchange basis, with host countries around the & world.” . The visiting students siay for a year, usually with host Rotary families and attend the schools and take part in the activities of their hosts, They are thus able to acquire an understanding of the culture, customs and often the - language of that country and often, 'in:the process, make ‘ff life-long friendships. Their Rotary sponsors regard these young people (usually Grade 11 students) as ambassadors of.’ good will and expect them to make themselves available as speakers and resource persons at home and abroad. -This year, in. spite of severe economic restraints in * many countries, Rotary District 608 is aiming at having ata - ; total of 41 exchange students, one for each of its clubs, either q abroad or visiting here. Ken, who is presently with his third Rotary: “family,” sent the following letter recently to the Castlegar club. March 27 Dear Sirs; | My conscience has finally got the best or me, so Tm” writing a short letter to let you know how I'm doing. : Leon, my city, is the fifth largest city in Mexico. The population here is about one million people, so needless to say it’s very different from Castlegar. The people, here are the friendliest people I've ever met. They are very happy to help you in any way they can — even if they’ve never seen you before. I'm very happy living here and the only thing I really miss is skiing. The’ weather is getting really hot; and one of my friends tells me it’s going to get ‘even hotter. T'm now with my third family. My first family was the family of Dr.Gonzalez Negrete. I spent 2'/z. very enjoyable months with them. They have eight children but only two are still living at home and the youngest daughter (of seven) is in Walla Walla, Wash. on the exchange. My second family was that of Jesus Solis Padilla. I lived with them for 2! months also. I had more fun and met'more people with this - family than any of my three families. They were Jesus, Olivia, Oli, Chito (in Ohio, USA) Karla and Moniqua. . , My’ .next family, ard present one, is that .of ithe Bullfights’ Judge of Leon, Guillermo Liceaga Diaz Infante. They have three girls one of whom is in Ohio, USA. I will | spend my last 2! months in Mexico with a family by the + name of Estrada and that's all I've been told (about them).. When I was with my second family my (host) dad, one of the directors of the professional soccer: team here, got me Rotary akthange student Ken Ross ‘ Castlega ida) with his third host father et interested in soccer. I then asked the principal to get me put on- one. of the six: inter-school teams that -play ‘every Saturday, He put.me on the team of ‘Los Gluteos” which translates basically :to “the Bums.” I. also: play on. the ‘director's team occasionally. My second host dad also introduced’ me to the Sach of ‘the professional soccer team in Leon, Professor Jose Gomes Nogueira, of Brazil. Professor Nogueria invited me to ‘meet’ the players at training sessions, and after the home'‘games he lets me come into the dressing room and talk with him and the players. He invited ‘me to go to Guadalajara with him and the team a month ago to watch the game. I was allowed to take ~ pictures in the dressing room, on the field during warm-up, and on the bus. I-ate and ‘spent all my time with Gomes Nogueira and the players and I got to watch the game in the director's special booth with’ all the directors. For all the hotel, transport, game pass and food I didn't pay one peso. T'm now helping Gomes Nogueira to improve his English and he.is helping me learn more Spanish. Last week the Rotary Club of Leon received a guest | irom the Central States — a Mr. Alfred DeSimone, together _ with his wife and‘an Austrian student who-was living with” “them in the USA. ‘Mr. DeSimone's Rotary Club'and District ._ who.-is’ a\ bull fighting judge, and a Mexican _ bullfighter (right). he eS ‘school, provided it with: two buses, and bought the’ city’ ‘of. Leon a firetruck. He'received, from the city, ‘three pairs of. shoes in appreciation for wit ne and ils club have done for : the city. “\) Mr. DeSimone'’s reason for coming was that he had been ‘invited, by a student who had.lived with his family in the U.S., to be the second witness at her wedding. I guess that shows that the Rotary International student exchange é builds strong friendships. Since the people of Leon started sending students on’ ithe exchange in 1974 they've had 60 students spend a year in Canada or the USA. The chairman and the élub‘in Leon would be very pleased to have more interaction, between’ our District (Canada) and Leon's District. Also, our chair-: man would be very happy to accommodate anyone who. ‘might be visiting Mexico, You are-all invited to come and visit me if you are coming to Mexico. Well that’s all fon now. |30, Atos! | S Sincerély Yours : KenRoss — - ‘ While Ken is in Mexico, Ruth Henderson, an exchange student from New Zealand, is staying at the home of Mr. and” ‘Stan stendings -— her second Castlegar Rotary “family” — has: helped the Leon Club’ build a special h i and g Stan! nley. lary school. -Kootenay _ Naturalists . club members travelled to Grand Forks to view birds gather- ing at the lakes‘and marshes Members of the West have been-busy taking note 'Gifiray having Bvobleme ation. of a Class “A” proviti- year for nature lovers,” the cial parksalong the west side spokesman said.
