Kokanee, one of B.C.'s favorite beers, is now also one of Alberta's favorite brews following Columbia Brewing Co.'s move into the Alberta market last year, says marketing manager Mike Cyr. The move began last April when Columbia began testing the Alberta waters in the licensed facilities in Lethbridge, Cyr says. Medicine Hat and Red Deer followed and by the fall Kokanee was available in ‘Calgary and Edmonton, he says. As of February, Kokanee is also now available in Alberta liquor stores in cans and will be followed shor- tly by bottled Glacier brew, Cyr says. “We've been growing step by step,’”’ he says. “Making sure our production could match the demand."’ Blanketing Alberta with Kootenay beer will mean a production increase of 35 per cent at the Creston plant, the only place Kokanee products are made, Cyr says. That increase in production has allowed the company to maintain its workforce of about 200 in Creston. However, Alberta is as far afield as Columbia plans to go for now. **We're going to sit back and gauge the response in Alberta,’’ Cyr says. ‘‘Our primary objective is to supply the B.C. market and we don’t ever want to shortchange a B.C, customer.”” Columbia, the B.C. success story that grew out of the union of four small Kootenay breweries in the late 1950s, has been supplying B.C. customers with its unique brand of beer since the Creston plant opened in 1959. Creston was chosen back then because of the purity of the water in the area which is ideal for brewing Kokanee products such as Kootenay True Ale, Kokanee Glacier Light and Kokanee Glacier Pilsener, Cyr says. Labatt’s bought Columbia Brewing in 1974 and the Creston plant has been expanded three times since then. Canning of Kokanee products is done by Labatt’s in its Lower Mainland plant, he says. In 1988, the Creston plant produced 13.4 million dozen brews, doubling production from 6.2 mitlion dozen only six years before. Kokanee’s success on the market is often at- tributed to Columbia’s innovative, originally low- budget adverti: ampaign that features distinctive, off-the-wall characters and emphasizes fun. The creative team of Scali, McCabe, Sloves (SMS) launched the campaign for Columbia in 1982 with a ‘We’re going to sit back and guage the response in Alberta. Our primary objective is to supply the B.C. market and we don’t ever want to shortchange a B.C. customer.’ — Mike Cyr, marketing manager for Columbia Brewing Co. budget of $80,000. They targeted radio, a medium the national brands such as Molson, Carling and Labatt's had abandoned for TV. SMS used humor to catch people's attention and showcase the product. BCTV weatherman, Norm Grohmann and CFUN radio morning host Fred Latremouille were hired to be the voices of Bob and Bill. The campaign worked and production at the Creston brewery began to climb. TV advertising and more characters followed, such as Sasq, the Sasquatch and his cousin Ab, the Abominable Snowman. Then came Brew, a North Vancouver mutt whose name is really Aristotle. But the success of Kokanee is ‘‘testament to the product,’ Cyr says. *‘All advertising did was allow us to get the message out. Now the secret isn’t just out, it’s been taken to another province. Who knows where it may travel next. EST. 1929 VWVILLIAMS Moving & Storage Ltd. Williams provides expert service Williams Moving and Storage (B.C.)
