Upon reading the notice I won- dered how nany of your readers made a date to attend at-that meeting. Judghng by the poor attendance at previous meetings I would say there were not many, .and by the same token it would aopear that many other points of considerable importance are overlooked, among these could be mentioned the following: (1) How many taxpayers realize what Little value they get for each school tax dollar. (2) By the apathy of the taxpayer it is equivalent to the handing of his purse to the school Board with. an invitation to helo thnenselves.. (3)..Having..no opposition, the. ‘School Board does bo, freely. (4) The Scnool Board then goes to work, sets the anount required for spending in the year following and proceeds with out interruption to accomplish the spe- nding; meenwhile the taxpayer pays, if ine doesn't, the property on which the tax 1s levied is later sold at a-Tax Sale when the taxes are delinquent. (5) How meny taxpayers reelize that up in the hilis at Pass Creek and Gibson Creek they have an investment of $40, (000.00 and at Thrums about $80, 000.00 and now the School Board is inviting $500 ,000-00. (6) How neny realize, if I remember correctly, that. this is more than “halt | the assessable valuation of all the land and buildings in the now municip— ality of Castlegar. Do you think Mr. Editor that it would be a good idea for the children to remain at home and the parents go to school to learn how to spend their nard earned money. School building costs are high. Years ago when they were not nigh ana materials of all kinds were plentiful and cheap, the schools were just plain ordinary buildings. The cost of educ- ation was not high, but the finished product from the schools turned out to be a pretty useful citizen, now that materials are very costly and very difficult to obtain the schools being built are flashy ultra modern stream— lined structures covering a fair acre- age of ground, and the education costs are proportionately higher. The fini- shed product of today unfortunately is handicapped by world conditior?. What with mechanization, socialization and utter confusion due to the present military fina neial control, of our econ onic systen, the youth of today, with all ‘the most modern schools and tuition lhas a big problem and if he can remedy the present insecurity and frustration the school costs will ve worth the money spente In the meantime we are developing the Borstal System and oth-— er abortive corrective institutions at enormous public exoense. The taxpayers will soon be called upon to vote on the By-Law prepared for the little sum mentioned above and I would strongly recommend thet those who are to pay should attend the meet— ing on the 2lst and learn a little about what is being offered for the moneye "ALARMED 't BE PLEASED _CASTLE THEATRE witH A 47 :
