a mixture of fascination and awe.

Our ongoing fascination with the
mesmerizing orb is evident. Songs such as
By the Light of the Silvery Moon, Bad Moon
Rising, Moonlight in Vermont, Shine on
Harvest Moon, Blue Moon, Moon River, and
Harvest Moon give evidence of the spell the
moon has cast upon many of us.

Some farmers faithfully sow and reap by the moon.
All one has to do is examine The Old Farmer's Almanac,
which publishes a lunar planting table as proof that lunar
planting is alive and well.

Lovers bask in the light of the moon. Across the world
initiations and ceremonies are held under the moon by
cultures which rely on moon phases for everyday

decisions. Some say that to get rid of warts one must bury
a string under a tree by the light
of a full moon. Witchery is often practiced
under a full moon.

If we're sad we're mooning around; if our face is round
it’s said our face is moon-shaped; if we feel a little “off”

moonstone; and another recent “lunar” occurrence is the
baring of buttocks—called mooning.

The litany of the moon and its almost supernatural
influence on humans is startlingly lengthy.

During a full moon in the late 1970s more than 100
Iranians attempted suicide.

A Tallahasee, Florida surgeon examining records of
patients who had undergone tonsillectomies discovered
that more than eight out of ten “bleeders” occurred
during a full moon.

A team of psychiatrists and psychologists found that the
murder rate in Dade County, Florida, was unusually high
during the full moon.

Julius Caesar was murdered on a full moon—as were the
people of Mai Lai, Vietnam.

But the moon also plays other roles in our lives—roles
which are quite different from those listed above.

A medical survey conducted in Connecticut
found that a large majority of co-eds preferred to
have sex during the full moon. That's also when
most women ovulate.

This was proven out by the results of three studies of
some one million births in New York City. Many of the
births occurred around the full moon than at any other
time during the month—which makes perfect sense as
human gestation [duration of pregnancy] lasts nine lunar
months.

It is also known that the tides are under the influence of
the moon. As the moon passes over oceans it tugs the
water directly beneath it, causing high tides.

There’s no doubt that the moon influences most of us
to some degree

Cpl. Al Hudema of the Castlegar RCMP says that during
full moons the police can count on “weird” calls and
unusual experiences.

“We looked at the calendar last week and said ‘When's
the full moon?”

COINCIDENCE OR
SHEER LUNACY?

schedules around their lunar cycles only to see a marked
decrease in motor vehicle accidents.

- A Pacific crustacean needs the moon to know when to
grow another chamber on its spiral.

+ Birds use the moon’s gravitational tug to navigate.

+ The biological functions of a California man who was
confined to a hospital room void of any dues with

waxing, or growing larger. It's believed that as the moon
gains strength as it grows, so does hair when just cut
before the full moon. .

reach sexual maturity, and taste best at the full moon.

+ The luminescent Atlantic fireworm lights up the waters
near Bermuda when it swarms near the ocean’s surface
each full moon in the spring.

- Nova Scotia fishermen maintain that the biggest
catches of North Atlantic herring during a full moon.

+ Oglala Sioux Indians believed that merely dreaming of
the moon was an open invitation for catastrophe.

Sudden deaths, domestic

assault and loud parties are

common occurrences during a

full moon, said Hudema.

The police roster during

recent full moons reads:

+ Saturday, Sept. 9: shots

heard, domestic problem with

neighbor children, a fight, anda

loud party.

+ August 10: loud party, theft

of an engine, three reports of

possible impaired drivers, anda

suspicious occurrence.

+ July 12: suspicious vehicles, loud

party, and a domestic occurrénce.

- June-13: domestic assault, assist with

general public and a driving complaint

+ May 14: (Mothers’ Day)

a dog problem, suspicious occurrence and assist

with general public

+ April 15: Complaint of littering

and a domestic dispute

Interspersed among those reports were

several sudden deaths and suicides.

“It [the full moon] tends to make something come out in
people. We notice an increase in the number of unusual
calls,” explains Hudema.

Denise Reed, Castlegar’s director of nursing, was hesitant
to blame full moons on unusual medical occurrences, but did
offer some comment

“Wt’s a common belief amongst health care workers that
more babies are born during a full moon and that there are
more emotionally disturbed patients coming in. However, '
don’t have anything to back that up.”

Lawrence Chemoff, an emergency paramedic for the
Castlegar ambulance service, said he and fellow
employees are acutely aware of the effect the full moon
has on humans

“It just gets busier. We always look for the full moon—we
know it'll get busier. We build for it

We're always prepared for it.”

While working as a licensed practical nurse at a local
hospital, | used to dread night shifts—especially those which
fell on, or around, a full moon. | knew without a doubt that if
things went wrong it would be during that time all heck
would break loose—full moon frenzy.

| remember one night in particular. A docile elderly
gentleman, who had full control of his faculties, had just
received surgery to replace a hip. That night, a full moon,
was one I'll never forget. The man, “Fred”, became flat-out
loony, if you will. He didn’t remember his name or where
he was. As the night wore on he became combative and
severely agitated. Nursing care for him that night was one-
orone. Eventually, and against our better judgment, we had
to restrain the man in his bed so he wouldn't injure his hip:
Deaths, births and calamities weren't unexpected during
and around full moons. In fact, during coffee break,

when we would be discussing a particularly crazy and
stressful shift, someone would inevitably check to see if it
was a full moon. It usually was

Our enchantment with the moon will never end, and
there will always be controversy about its effect upon all
that it bathes in its silvery light. People will continue to gaze
up at the moon with awe and fascination. Lovers will pledge
their undying love beneath the moon. Stories and songs
about the moon and its mysterious pull will continue

And people will continue to wonder—

is it coincidence or sheer lunacy?
