Each year, the federal Revenue Department re- ceives thousands of tele- phone calls or letters from estranged and vengeful wives or husbands, lovers, disgruntled employees and other angry citizens squedl- ing on their enemies. “We get literally thou- sands of letters each year and we check each one of them for validity — and in some cases they are true,” said George Venner, director of audit programs for the tax department in Ottawa. wed- dings, dances, and work- shops, and is also the home of the Whole School. At the annual meeting, members will elect a board of directors, review the year’s activities, and determine dir- ections for the future. Inflation may grow in States WASHINGTON (REUT- ER) — A growing number of economic experts predict in- flation in the United States will almost double to about seven per cent by the end of the year as the economy heats up. A small but influential group even fears it may shoot up to nine per cent by 1985. In 1983 it fell to 3.8 per cent, the lowest level since the 1960s, after the harsh re- cession of recent years slash- ed wage demands, curbed price rises and strangled consumer demand. But private and govern- ment economists worry in- flation may begin to pervade daily life again as rapid econ- omie growth prompts unions to press for higher wages and vastly increased demand leads to bigger price mark- Ps. “The rapid profit growth of the recent past will generate a great deal of heat in union negotiations; indeed, an auto strike is a real possibility,” wrote Roger Brinner of Data Resources in an April econ- omic forecast. Federal Reserve Board chairman Paul Volcker has said auto and construction industry contract talks later this year will be “a crucial testing period for inflation.” But some analysts have been even grimmer outlooks. The monetarists, who believe money pumped into the econ- omy today will drive up prices much later on, lead this minority. Milton Friedman, a prom- inent monetarist, says in the last two years monetary growth jumped to 9.5 per cent, higher than in any other two-year period since the Second World War. e Certified General Accountant 270 Columbia Ave. Castlegar Ph. 365-2151 MOROSO, MARKIN & BLAIN Certified General Accountants 241 Col Ave. bai, vba ia chia . r Castlegar Ph. 365-7287 “Get back in bedi!!"’ MM.
