AROYAL AFFAIR

The past weeks have seen
the visit of Charles and Diana
to BC. for the opening of
Expo 86. The news media
have been full of stories
about the visits of the royal
couple across the province.

We see them visiting with
the elderly, showing compas-
sion for hospital patients, and
80 on.

‘There are many who have
a great deal of respect for the
monarchy as servants of the
people, those who stand for
decency and old-fashioned
values.

We have a monarchy to
day. And past years have
seen many other monarchies.

Back in the Old Testament,
Israel asked God for a king.
Their first king, Saul, fell
short of God's will and had
the throne taken away and
given to a young shepherd
named David.

In time, David became one
of the nation's most powerful
kings. The Bible says that
David was a king after God's
own heart.

David has a place in the
Biblical hall of fame, but he
was definitely no plaster
saint without defect of any
kind. At one point in his life,
he made a serious error in
judgment that dogged him
through the rest of his life.
Second Samuel chapter 11
has the story.

At the height of his power
and kingly glory, David's
army went off to war. But
David stayed home. He had
time on his hands. Every
thing he wanted was his.

One evening, he saw Bath-
sheba bathing on the roof of
an adjacent building. Bath-
sheba was a very beautiful

woman, and David was en-
tranced.

He called on one of his ser-
vants to find out what the
woman's name was. David
summoned her and commited
adultery with her. She be-
came pregnant.

Bathsheba's husband was a
soldier. He was off to war
when David had a royal affair
with his wife. When Bath-
sheba’s husband returned,
David tried his best to cover
up his sin.

He wanted to send the man
back to his wife and make it
appear that the child was
conceived by the woman's
husband and not by him.

The man would have noth-
ing to do with David's plans.
And so David had him killed

guilty of breaking God's laws.
One of God's prophets con-
fronted David with his sin,
and David humbly asked for
God's forgiveness. It was
granted.

But the effects of his sin
were to continue to bother
him for the rest of his life.
The child that he conceived
with Bathsheba got sick and
died. His family was plagued
by severe difficulties.

God sets standards to live
by. And some of those stan-
dards have to do with sexu-
ality. Adultery is forbidden.
In our day, we have lost
touch with God's standards.

The sexual revolution has
brought with it many casu-
alties. God's will is faithful

other for a lifetime. Reality is
much different.

God's way is the best way.
Christ came to pay the pen-
alty for our sins. He came to
give us a brand new start and
allow us to live God's way.

God's standards have stood
the test of time. We break
those standards at our peril.
His forgiveness is real as
people repent of their ‘sitis
and allow Christ to forgive
them and give them that new
start. But so is his wrath over
sin.

Live by God's standards.
You will experience a special
liberation and freedom. Da-
vid learned his lesson the
hard way. Must we do the
same?

Ministers from the various.
churches in Castlegar met at
the United Church Tuestiay
where Rev. Ted Bristow is
pastor.

John, the 16th chapter.

Pastor, Bristow foeused-on-
the ‘Spirit of God and Pen
tecost. Thoughts on the late
Harold Duckworth were

Guest speaker this month
was Gary Pearson, vice-

president of the Castlegar
Chamber of Commerce. The
Yobus was of SonFest 86, and

isterial.

It is possible the minis-
terial will be involved with
the summer festivities if firm
conclusions can be arrived at.

were raised and it was de

with old business arising out
of the minutes. Comments
were made relative to the

Rev. Terry Defoe closed in

given to Rev. Defoe, who will
be leaving Castlegar in June.

The next meeting will be
held June 10 at the Church of
God.
