20 Castlegar News 1967 Review, March 25, 1967 CASTLEGAR NEWS 40 YEARS OLD ‘The Castlegar News celebrates its 40th'year of continuous operation ii 1987. First publishéd as The Castle News on Aug. 7, 1947 by L.V. (Les) Campbell, the newspaper has changed a lot in the last four decades. That first edition was published every Thursday — compared to today’s newspaper which is published twice a week, on Wednesday afternoons and Sunday mornings. But more than just the publication day separates the Castlegar News of today from its predecessor, For one thing the 1947 paper was physically smaller, measuring just 8% inches wide by 14 inches tall. And it was just four pages. The appearance was also vastly different, Advertise- ments occupied much of the four pages — ads for businesses such as The Rose Cafe (now Mallard’s Ski and Sport) “Not just another place to eat, but a place to eat another;” and the Castle Theatre, which featured George Raft and Sylvia Sidney in Mr. Ace. ‘The first paper was produced in the manager's office of the Castle Theatre, which Campbell had opened just seven months earlier on Jan. 3, 1947. Later, as the newspaper grew it moved to the basement of the theatre. But that humble beginning was just that — a beginning. For the last 40 years the Castlegar News has grown along with the community it has served. WHERE IT STARTED . . . The Castle Theatre in 1947, where the first issue of the Castle News was produced.
