The biggest mistake most make is just
going part way, then mixing in other parts
or styles that aren't traditional and don't fit
tie theme of the car. It takes the whole
enchilada to make it work.

You (should) know that teardrop taillights
mount with the point down, but did you
know that teardrops go on ‘32 five-win-
dows, ‘47 Chevy taillights of on '32 three-
windows, and '5O Olds taillights go Deuce
roadsters? And on Deuces, teardrop tail-
lights should mount above the end charac-
ter lines in the gas tank—not too close
together.

On Deuce highboys, the headlights
should be mounts so the front of the lens is
in line with th middle grille bar. And on
Deuces and Model A's, the radiator shell
should note leaned back. With the car on a
rake, the grille should tip forward. And on
all early cars, the hood top and-parting linc
should be parallel with the beltline; the
hood and/or grille should not tilt uphill.

Windshields or tops should not be
chopped too little or too much. Tree inches
is good on a Deuce roadster. On three-win-
dow coupes, the windshield should be
leaned back when the top is chopped, and

the front should be chopped and
inch more than the back. In gen-
eral, an early hot rod should
have a continuous wedge shape,
front to back. Further, in general,
throw away your tape measure
and build the car so it looks right
to your eye.

Exhaust pipes should be
round, not square. Taillights
shouldn't be square either,

Big tires in the back does not
mean wide. Highboys should
have a 12-inch width maximum,
and a 29-inch height minimum.

On any highboy (and other
cars and pickups. too. such as F-
100s), cheat the frdént axle for;
wards as much as possible, say
on inch on ‘32s and more on ‘33-
‘34s. On a ‘34 highboy. move the
rear axle forward slightly, too.
Again, don't go by measure-
ment; move the whecl/tire to
where it look right

Don't use a narrowed axle on
the front of a highboy. Don't
make the front axle too narrow,
don't make the rear axle too
wide.

No ghost flames or pinstripe
flames—if you're going to flame
it, flame it.

Don't forget to go to the
chrome shop.

Finally, keep it simple. Don't
build the car for other to look at,
build to to satisfy yourself. Start
with a theme and stick to it.
Don't keep changing your mind.
Don't be influenced by other
people's cars. Know your budget
and build the car accordingly.
