As they the Pascal mystery of death and resurrection which will have its own cycle of ritual enactment at the altar. I wanted to show them as they are now, (near the door) at home with God in spirit, while exiled here in their mortal body; not of course the immemorial angels, of whom there are two living stones in a spiritual t yourselves built into a Spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.’ “Those who have already visited the Abbey church will have noticed the altar made of massive granite, and raised on steps directly under the dome. “The altar is a reminder of the tomb in which Jesus, having died on the cross, was buried and rose for us. It also reminds us of the table at which Jesus celebrated his Eucharist the night before he died as a perpetual memorial. “The elvurch as a sacred place stands for what it houses: christ and his worshipping community. As Jesus said, ‘Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.’ “The saints are those of all ages who have gathered themselves together in his name. Paul speaks of these elect in his Epistle to the Romans.’ Centuries have since passed into eternity, yet who can doubt his words are true of them even today? He says, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are being killed all the day long; we are gathered as sheep to be slaughtered! No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, tor things’present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ COMMUNION OF THE SAINTS IN DAILY WORSHIP “Following this ancient teaching the monks at the abbey decided to show in a visible way this ‘communion of the saints’ in our daily worship. “And so the four gigantic interior buttresses supporting the dome are to bear reliefs — 16 in all — but the prop! and patriarchs, apostles and martyrs, kings and popes, married saints and virgins, monks and mystics, forming a representative procession down the ages. TO REMIND US THAT WE ARE NOT ALONE IN THIS DARK WORLD “There is a pathos in the relics of saints, in the places where they lived, in the stories they left behind. In order to understand this better (I mean their curious minglii FATHER DUNSTAN MASSEY . outside Westminster Abbey living a full and significant spiritual life. It is reflected in the sweep of the fields, the variety of the woods, and copses, and the paths that weave them together. It is reflected in the harmony and spaciousness of the ildi the Abbey church and particularly of mortality and immortality) I made a study of death masks taken from the faces of saints and found them extraordinarily moving. “Somehow through the already stony flesh — unmistakably signed as it were by death — there has survived a radiance of their ecstasy as the soul fled. Because of the delicate impress left in clay, I hope the medium will enable me to leave some traces of that divine seizure in the hands, and the faces and the bodies of these long-dead persons. The stony remains of these castings taken from the original clay will remind us that we are not alone in this dark world. Their spirits have gone before, are with the Lord at the altar, even as their bodies lie sepulchred beneath it. “Looking toward it from the four central piers, their effigies signalize the Lord's return, His summons from east, west, north and south of His elect to sit down with Him to the wedding feast in His Father's kingdom.” BUILT TO THE GLORY OF GOD In his excellent book, The Cathedral, The Story of Its Construction, David MacCauley writes: “The Gothic cathedral is one of man’s most magnificent expressions as well as some of his greatest achievements. Built to the glory of God, each cathedral was created by the ingenuity, skill and hard work of generations of dedicated people. “That same spirit is, I feel being recreated here at Abbey. The i of beauty is an essential dimension in the framework of space, time and the sculptures which are began to give that oe iad out “Moreover, as in the Gothic cathedral spirit, they are a vit ible manifestation of the pooling of the talents, the the service and purpose in the monastery which has made the whole thing possible. They are symbols in concrete of the faith of the community in the present and finger-posts to the future.” Albert Toynbee, the great historian, has suggested that there may come a time — quite possibly it is already upon us — when there is a great need for retreat, for disengagement from the business and pleasure of the present in order to look inward, to reopen fundamental questions, to appraise human potential against human condition. Even at this time the constant stream of visitors to the Abbey is an early indication of this need; the sculptures a key to its realization. In the meantime, the birds are tracing arabesques in the evening sky and filling the air with a hundred melodies, the bees are humming erver louder in their efforts to get the last drops df nectar from the pink Corianthus blossoms before the evening chill, and the St. Basil cartoon is pinned to the drawing board. The studio has been swept clean, tools polished and scores of modules of “mix” have been prepared. Next week the process of creation begins again. It does well also to remember that the Benedictines have been in business for 1500 years. Then read on. Because The Dominion has the ideal solution. The Ideal Monthly Payment Plan.
