THOSE IN NEED Co-ordinator Paul Beaudoin says the program's aim is to help both those with a newly acquired disability and people like Burke, who are used to the disability but are going through rough emotional times. The idea for the program came from a group of dis T abled people in the community n “As individuals, we were very aware of the need within the community — the germ started there,” says program r chairman Margaret Hiltz (no relation to Gary), whose child we hood bout with polio left her in a wheelchair. Similar programs exist in Calgary, Winnipeg and the United States, but the committee wasn't aware of them when it started work on Peer Partnership. e OTTAWA FUNDS H Funding fora twoyeut demonstration project came ind raw winners from the federal government The funding proposal suggested Peet Partnership D b 00! off th N Advertisi : rawn by Dianna Kootnikoff, Castlegar News ertising would be able to make about 50 matches over the life of the re R ive, and ViS 7M of West's Travel Dept. program, but it seems likely that estimate will be exceeded. Since the program began in late August, 12 partnerships have been formed, eight more are in the works and another five applicants are waiting for volunteers. The applicants have a variety of visable and hidden dis abilities, including spinal cord injuries, polio, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and narcolepsy In some cases, the applicants are paired with volunteers who have the same disability. In others, the program will cross disabilities, as it did with Burke and Gary Hiltz. Burke is one of only a handful of people in Nova Scotia suffering from edpidermolysis bullosa, a disease that causes the skin to blister, leaving much of it open and raw and highly vulnerable to infection. LOST HIS HANDS So why was she matched with Gary Hiltz, who lost both his hands when he was zapped with 7,200 volts of electricity while working as a power company lineman? Burke feels on reason is that,.as a burn victim, he has some understanding of the pain she experiences.
