SES LOS SVVeVtSVese@aeaer SSA SPORTS Officials hope for teams LONDON (AP) — The World League of American Football may begin play next spring with as few as 10 teams and only three in Europe, a league spokesman said Thursday. The league, an offshoot of the NFL, still hopes to have a dozen teams, including four in Europe and one in Montreal, when: it kicks off its inaugural season on March 23, But problems have arisen in two potential franchise sites — Milan, Italy and Mexico City, and they may be scrapped when the WLAF decides on its first- season structure next week, said league spokesman Thomas Hen- sey. rt Tourney The second annual Lemo-Ed Memorial golf tournament was Played Sept. 29 at the Nelson Golf Club and the furn-out nearly doubled that of last year’s event. Ninety-four men and women, together with a number of local mer- chants, all contributed to an eventful day of golf to raise funds-for two scholarship endowments to the Selkirk College Foundation, Selkirk College says in a news release. The players were mostly friends of Edward Cavanaugh and Peter Lem- mon, two young men who were killed in separate industrial accidents during the summer of 1989. Ken Black, one of the tournament organizers, is in the second year of the college’s golf. club management and operations program at the Nelson campus. “I got involved because I knew Ed and Peter. Also, I was performing my practicum at the Nelson campus last summer and my instructor ap- proved of my involvement because of my aspirations in the golf in- dustry. Organizing and running golf tournaments is something we will be expected to have experience in,"’ said Black, a long-time resident of Nelson. He also set MTU single-season records for penalties and penalty minutes. Martini was whistled 59 times for nets funds for college residents Frank and Hume Curiston and Dan Conne. A resounding success, the tour- nament raised $3,900 through Pledges and the raffle of contributed prizes. The funds have been divided evenly, and- have been used to augment the Ed Cavanaugh Memorial music scholarship, which was established through the Selkirk College Foundation by Cavanaugh’s parents, Paul and Gwen Cavanaugh, last year. The other half of the Proceeds will initiate the first award under the Selkirk College Foun- dation’s Athletic and Citizenship Endowment, which is part of the Visions campaign. All 96 golfers played simultaneously as the event featured @ shotgun start and was played as a team scramble. The tournament was completed in six-and-a-half hours. This year, the Heritage Inn donated a revolving trophy, while other prizes were awarded to low-gross scorers in a number of team categories. It is the lovely Buckfast Abbey and was first built in the 11th century then rebuilt largely in its original form in 1937. It is regarded as being unique among monasteries since the construc- tion work was completed in one lifetime — 30 years. The work was begun in 1907 by six monks on the cruciform (cross-shaped) foundation of the original church. Only one of their members, Brother Peter, had any training as a stone mason. Argos, league leaders with 81 touchdowns, and the Pp of the Saskatchewan Roughriders with Kent Austin at the controls. Passaglia doesn’t rule out the Edmonton Eskimos in the West and the eastern Rough Riders, but he figures offence is more important than defence in the high-scoring CFL. “Toronto has a coaching staff that has been in the playoffs before and a lot of skilled people,” says Passaglia. ‘‘They should outscore Ottawa — on both sides of the football — playing at home.”’ Passaglia and the B.C. Lions are sitting out post-season play for the second consecutive year, leaving the 36-year-old punter and place- kicker to follow the playoff exploits of several former coaches and B.C. kicker likes Argos, Sask. Lui Passaglia, the CFL’s all-time scoring leader, favors the high- powered offences of Toronto and Saskatchewan in the CFL semifinals The respected kicker likes the quick-strike threat of the Toronto The monk’s ‘‘home,”’ the equally large monastery building, (not open to the public) abuts on to the south side of ed - iy Our guide, a merry monk called Brother Nicolas, welcomed us at the door and with quiet Pride and a considerable sense of humor, showed, us around the richly conceived interior of the church The original had been built almost 1,000 years earlier by the Cistercians (the “White Monks,” so- named for their white robes), an order which had originated in Citeaux, France. However, as an oblate of the Benedictine monastery, Westminster Abbey, at Mission, B.C., I should have known better. Buckfast was big, really big — at least 150 feet long and 50 wide, and built entirely of stone. The structure of the new church conforms exactly to the original Cistercian ground plan and is done in a building style known as Cister- cian Norman transitional, a style which preceded the they worronty twice in nine road games this eyar. Dave Albright returns from an arm injury to play middle linebacker. Austin was the CFL passing leader (4,604 yards), but threw as many interceptions (27) as touchdowns. The Green Riders need a strong game from fullback Milson Jones (765 yards rushing) if they are to control play. He respects the coaching of Don Matthews in Toronto, aided by offensive co-ordinator Adam Rita. Both were on the B.C. staff when the Lions won the Grey Cup in 1985. Passaglia also follows Saskatchewan closely, where Larry Donovan is special teams coach. Donovan was head of the Lions two years ago when B.C. reached the CFL championship game. “*Saskatchewan’s offence is more in sync right now than Edmonton's,’ Passaglia says. ‘*Another factor could be the kicking Ridgway led the CFL with a record $9 field goals and tied the ig record of 233 points. SASKATCHEWAN (9-9) at EDMONTON (10-8) The Roughriders are defending champions. They won last year by taking three games on the road. The Roughies may not repeat because plays much better on the neutral grass of Commonwealth Stadium, where the Eskimos Posted a 7-2 league record. They miss the breakaway threat of injured running back Reggie Taylor, so look for quarterback Tracy Ham to take off more than usual. Ham threw a league high 36 touchdown passes. The Edmonton defence needs to apply pressure on Austin and it must come inside from tackles Mike Walker and Brett Williams. The secondary can survive an aerial assault only if the pass rush reaches Austin. Prediction: Edmonton by four points (1:30 p.m., PST, CFN) OTTAWA (7-11) at TORONTO (10-8) This should be a huge mismatch and definitely high scoring because the Riders defence allowed more than 600 Points while Toronto scored almost 700. Ottawa also might have to play without linebacker Bruce Holmes, the team’s best defensive player. He was suspended for delivering a late hit to Argo quarterback Rickey Foggie last Saturday. An abitrator will decide if Holmes can play Sunday. Ottawa has offensive talent. Quarterback Damon Allen threw 34 touchdown passes, rookie back Reggie Barnes ran for 1,260 yards and David Williams caught 12 touchdown Passes. They key matchup for Toronto is cornerback Reggie Pleasant against Williams. Pleasant can run with Will ims and, if he keeps the receiver in front of him, will limit Ottawa's offence. Toronto scores often, a tribute to the coaching of Matthews and Rita after star quarterback Matt Dunigan missed much of the year with injuries. Rickey Foggie starts (23 touchdown Passes and 743 yards rushing) and should get the ball often to running back Mike Clemons (3,300 combined yards) and slotback Darrell Smith (20 touchdowns). Prediction: Toronto by more than seven Points (10:30 a.m., PST, CBC). high-soaring and more open form of the medieval LOAN-OUT CAMERA The Castlegar News has two simple-to-operate loan-out cameras (complete with film) which it is pleased to allow groups to use for taking pictures for use by the Castlegar News. Gunnars, who is of Icelandic background, is an established poet, and novelist who has published six volumes of poetry and, in 1989, an experimental novel entitled The Prowler, set in Iceland at the end of the Second World War. She also has established a reputation as a tran- slator and editor of Icelandic folk tales and the poems and essays of Icelandic writer Stephan J. Stephan- son. Much of Gunnars’ writing draws on her Icelandic heritage and examines the process of Icelanders formulating a new identity in Canada. A new novel, Zero Hour, is an- ticipated in February.
