Recently in Cleveland, a bribery case was being tried. It was the closing of the Burke-Dellenbaugh bribery case, which ped a most ‘ional fea- and has been in public office since 1870, when he entered the Common. Council. He was sheriff in 1804, and in that year was raised to tbe knighthood for his dis- tinguished servises in connection with the opening of the tower bridge over the River Thames. During his term as Lord Mayor his daughter, Mrs. John ture. Ex-Judge i. J. Blandin, one of the three prosecutora of the charges against Vernon H. Burke, rose to speak 8 everyone supposed, in support of the charges and in defense of Judge Dellen- baugh. Instead of doing that the judge did not attempt to affirm or deny the truth of the charges nor did he attempt to defend Judge Dellenbaugh. He made a bitter and sensational attack on the whole bench of Cuyahoga county. He asid he knew the visk he was taking, but he did not care; others, who thought the same as he did, were afraid to say go publicly, and had warned him to be careful. He was willing to face the con- sequences. For some time the ex-judge and old members of the bar who listened to Blandon’s passionate utterances stood amazed at his daring. Then they broke into cheers. When the judge finished they cheered and clapped their hands again and fell over each other to, get to him and congratulate him. Judge Blandin declared that it was the bench which needed reforming first. The elitnination of rottenness. should commence with the bench, he said. He went into details, and did not hesitate to say he was talking about Judge Wal- ter C. Ong and Judge T.K. Diseette. He said it was 2 comparatively ineignif- cant thing whether Judge Dellenbaugh was impeached and driven” from the Pench or whether Vernon Burke was disbarred. It is more important, he de- clared, to cleanse the bench of Cuyahoga county 20 that property, liberty and life may be safe in the hands of the seven men constituting the court. It was one ofthe most sensational speeches ever made bps lawyer in Cuyahoga county, Judge Blandin’s standing at the bar is the highest. He possesses a reputa- tion for great integrity. —_—_— It is becoming more and more evident every day that to get the local news you must read the Recozp.
