New reading matter makes your advertisement attractive. We will gladly change your “tad” every issue if copy is presented before 10 a. m. The city of Nelson is evidently beginning to n)preciate the weight of its wickedness and hopes to atone for its sin by a strict enforcement of the Sunday by-law prohibiting the sale or vending of anything save, milk, drugs and medicines. Now just fancy Nelson being restricted to milk, Surely it would be a po- tent reminder of its past evil, but one of the aldermen thinks the pur- chase of a newspaper and a little smoking tobacco might be tolerated. Nelson will be a nice, peaceful place at which to pass Sundays. Of the eight men who sat down at President McKinley’s coun- cil table at the beginning of the ad- ministration only three remain, says a writer in Leslie’s Weekly. These are Secretaries Gage, Long and Wilson, respectively of the treasury, navy and agricultural departments. Secretaries Sherman and Day of - the state department followed each ether into retirement from that of- fice, and the portfolio went to Col- onel Hay. Attorney-General Mc- Kenna passed to the supreme court and Governor Griggs of New Jer- sey took the vacant place. Secre- tary Bliss of the Interior department was ded by Mr. Hitct Postmaster-General Gary gave way to. Charles: Emory Smith, one of ” the. hardest workers in the cabinet, and now General Alger has stepped out of the war office, and Elihue Root of New York has stepped in. All these changes have occurred in less than two and a half years. The South African situatjon daily assumes an aspect more grave, and while both parties seem disposed to avert aconflict, they are, neverthe- less, making every preparation for war. The cpinion of those who re- gard the beginning ofa war between Great Britain and the Transvaal as amatter of only a short time is voiced by the St. James Gazette which says: ‘‘The news concern- ing the crisis is very grave. We learn that three more infantry brig- ades have been ordered to Cape Colony, including the Gordons of Dagai fame, one batallion of the Highland light infantry, who fought in Crete, a second batallion of: the Watch and a second batallion of, the Camerons. These regiments are under orders to be. ready. to leave on twenty-four hours’ notice. Officers and men are delighted at the prospects of active service. In aservice. circl, idered. abso-, on to reorganize the party. and in the course of his remarks he says:.'‘'The statistics of the British blue book on trade for 1898 pre- sents two striking facts—that the notable ‘increase in American im- ports last year was chiefly in manu- factures, and that Canada is the leading competitor of the United States in forest and farm produce, This Canadian competition in the British market is now keener than it ever was, and American farmers preciate the fact that the outlook is that it will increase. That there should bé competition is inevitable, owing to the similarity of the natu- ral and farm productions of the United States and Canada and the equidistance of the two countries from this market. But during the past two years the Canadian trade has been given a great impetus through the operation of a system ot Government supervision and sub- sidies. Possibly influenced by the Canadian example, Russia is shortly to introduce the system of id and shippers would be wise to ap- |, Customs business when freight shall come in by rail to that town. Mr. Hugh McCutcheon, formerly of Kamloops but now of Nakusp, will be the official in charge. _ It is un- derstood that Mr. McCutcheon will also be Inland Revenue officer at Greenwood in place of Mr. Angus private reasons has resigned that office. Before assuming other duties, Mr. Stuart will take two or three months’ holidays during which to recuperate.—Midway Advance. It does not think much of them itself. the best that money could buy out west and represent a large expendi- ture for drawing and engraving. So far as The Province has been able to discover there is not a really first- class black and white artist in this country, nor have we as yet facili- ing the cold-storage service on ships bringing any products to Great Britain, and already Russia sends enormous quantities of these pro- ducts to the Liverpool market. Provincial Press, Mr. Forbes George Vernon, for- merly of the Turner cabinet and more recently agent-general in Lon- don, who returned to the country a few weeks ago, is credited with high political aspirations. Now that Mr. Turner has been ‘‘turned down” by the Colonist, Mr. Vernon has hopes that his long and faithful services in three or four administra- tions of his friends will be recog- nized, and that he will be called up- On his return he finds the party leaderless. When we come to look at the quali- fications of the several claimants we are forced to the conclusion that Mr. Vernon possesses claims equal to any and greater than most of the other aspirants.—Victoria Times. Arrangements have been made to open a Customs House at Green- wood shortly, so as to facilitate ties for repr drawings suita- able for printing on a fast press. Ihe drawings made for The Prov- ince had to be sent to Toronto for reproduction. . Probably the time is not far distant when some enter- prising person will set up a decent photo-engraving plant in Vancouver, and.the growing requirements of the city will attract some person or able of making h suitable for newspaper use. The experience of The Province has been of a very unsatisfactory character in the efforts to get illustrations of this description.—Province. a BUSINESS CARDS. Dk. 4. MILLoy, DENTIST.
