They could get their meals at the small hotelsand restau- rants for $5 per week, while at the mine boarding houses the charge is $x per day or $7 per week. Tnere is little difference between the qual- ity of the meals down town and on the hill, while the difference in price is $2 per week, That item has in- duced scores and scores of miners to live down town. Now when the restaurant men plan to raise the -| price of meals to 35 cents, or $1 per day, the miners declare that they will return again to the mine board- ing houses, which for convenience are.better than the down town ‘places. On the other hand the restaurant men say that as they have in many cases carried the miners until the latter could get work, it ill becomes the miaers to leave them when it is necessary to raise the price of RACE AGAIN A FAILURE, Columbia in Lead When Time Limit Ended. New WESTMINSTER, Oct. 5.— [Special.]—The Rossland firemen day won both the hub-and-hub race and the dry test in the Provincial competition. The prize in each case was S150 cash. The wet test is still to be run and the Rossland- ers have an excellent chance of win- ning it also. Their time in the hub race was 32 2-5, which establishes the coast record. [n the dry test their speed was 2034 seconds, The team comprises Jack Allen, captain; Charles Collins, manager; and Wm. Boyd, Fred Wilson, Frank Raymer, C. McBride, C. H. Wilson, W. Smith, A. Frew, J. Squires, E. Carlson and Gus Reb- ber. Two Rossland business men were represented here by $800, which was bet for them on the Rossland team. As a consequence they have made much money. WORKING ON THE CALIFORNIA eet oo Driving the Tunnel and Grading for New Plant. Company Has Plenty of Money and Will Make & Mino If Possible—Will Use Nlectricity Everywhere for Motive Power. Underground work was recom- menced yesterday in the California, after a suspension of about two years. Jay P. Graves, representing the Miner-Graves interests now in control of the company, has made all the arrangerrents for finding out what the ‘property contains, and he now has about ten men at work there on the surface and in the tunnel. . “The company has all the money necessary for developing the prop- erty thoroughly, and we mean to make a mine of it if such a thing be possible,” said Mr. Graves today before leaving for Spokane. “Until our new power plant is in shape we shall continue work in the tunnel, and two shifts are now at work there. It isin 220 feet, and we will drive it on indefinitely. The surface crew is now engaged in grading for the new compressor building and hoist house. The present shaft is down 50 feet and we will continue it in two-compart- ment size. “The compressor will be of 10-; drill capacity, and of the Rand! duplex-compound type. It will be! operated by an electric motor, as our experience with electricity on, the Mascot has been satisfactory. | The entire capacity of the compres- sor will be available for drills, as the hoist will be worked by a sepa- rate motor, and an electric sinking pump will probably be used. Ij think that the new machinery should all be in operation by the first of! next year.” J. B. Hastings, chief engineer for. meals, kane on a short business trip. the War Eagle and Centre Star, companies, left at noon for Spo- |FINE ‘ORE IN IRON MASK Lower Levels Show Chutes 10 and 12 Feet Wide. RICHEST ROCK IN THE CAMP First Olass Shipments Average Around $85— Second Class Iron Ore Returning From $10 to $183—More Power to Be Seoured. The development of the Iron Mask at the 300-and 350-foot level has opened some magnificent bodies of copper ore. The chutes there have proven to be from 10 to 12 feet wide and they ure producing the richest ore which is leaving the Rossland camp. The first class is averaging about $35 per ton in gold and copper, and ta: value is being steadily maintained. The vein on both the 300-and the 350-foot level has been opened for a distance of 60 feet and it shows a nearly ‘uniform quality of ore for the whole distance. Not only i is the quality of it remarkable but the size of the chutes is no less interesting. They have increased amazingly as depth has ’ been reached and the bottom of the mine now shows the biggest deposits in the whole property. The influence of the surface disturbances seems to have been. left behind, and in the solid formation now encountered the Iron Mask is’ surprising even those who knew it best. _ r “The” “property is now producing two grades’ of ore—the first class copper, which runs about $35, and the second class iron ore which re- turns from $10 to $13. Practically everything hoisted goes in.one bin or the other, and only a little hand sorting is resorted to. The*output of the mine is reaching from 250 to 300 tons a week, which is about all that can be hoisted with the present plant. Manager J. F. Herrick, who is in town today, has arranged for an ad- ditional motor with a capacity of sixty horse power. The present motor, with a capacity of one hun- dred horse power, is being worked to its full capacity, but is not able to drive the com pressor at its great- est efficiency. The new motor, which will be attached to the old one, will give altogether one hun- dred and sixty horse power, and it will then be possible to get plenty of air for operating both the hoist and the drills. WILL USE A TIMBER FRAMER. Le Hol Getting a Heavy New Plant to Do the Work. Up at the Le Roi the work of framing the heavy timbers used in the mine will soon be done by ma- chinery. ‘Arrangements are, being made to secure the necessary plant and a big building to house tt is {nearly pleted. The t ‘y {comprises a series of saws which take the round stick of timber land square each end of it. The cuts {thus made are mathematically per- ‘fect, and can be fitted into each other without difficulty. e Le Roi has been using an enormous amount of timber lately, land the timbermen are far behind jthe miners. The new machine will jnot need to work more than half |time to supply all the sticks needed lin the property. It will be the first one in the Province, although .sev- eral of the large mines on the Amer- ican side of the line have used the , Plants successfully,
