CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, October 19, 1978 ‘Record Kokanee Return ‘Nelson fisheries staff has nearly completed Kootenay Lake kokanee enumeration : work for 1978, ‘ Each year selected streams ( Mowing into Kootenay Lake are assessed for numbers of adult tkokanee. In some instances, ‘information is available for the , past 10 years, This information ;is important in managing the :kokanee sport fishery. 1 ' This year, returns to West . Arm streams were rated as fair » to good. The closure to kokanee ‘fishing at Balfour this summer ‘greatly assisted in conserving ,the numbers of fish returning ,to West Arm streams. Since «the 1976 year class of kokanee ‘appears to be in sufficient num- ‘bers, the kokanee closure at ‘Noted at Meadow Creek Balfour ended midnight, Sun- lay. Regional Fisheries Biolo- gist Harvey Andrusak advises that present daily and total possession limits will apply but further changes will occur in April, 1979. Kokanee spawning runs in south and north arm streams were rated from good to ex- cellent, A record 1.3 million kokanee returned to the Mea- dow Creek spawning channel. ‘These kokanee and those in the Lardeau River (estmated 1.5 million) frequent the north arm only and, therefore, contribute very little to the sport fishery. However, these kokanee are a very important food source for the lake's trophy rainbow trout. Larger Gun Can Magnify Error In this day of growing competition here in the west, many hunters think the answer is to get a larger, more power- ful gun. This could be the magnum rifle that will let a hunter bring down a deer, elk or moose from far away, or the magnum shot- gun that “reaches out” to bring birds down at long range. True, a magnum will ex- tend one’s range, but switching toa magnum will only magnify any faults a shooter already has. Those of us who aren't able to put hundreds of rounds through a gun in the course of a year are apt to have faults such as flinching, blinking, jerking the trigger in the exci of That big magnum boom, plus its added recoil, will throw off one's aim and more than counteract any increased shock- ing power, unless we work with it for many hours. Then too, most deer, elk, moose and other game are shot at close range. The long shots don't happen nearly as often as campfire stories would indicate, Then too, the longer the range, the greater the error the hunt, or simply poor marks- manship caused by lack of practice. caused by exeil jerking a trigger or flinching. As for birds, No. 2 shot in a magnum will bring geese down at some Local Bowling League Results Golden Age Bowlers (Oct. 4) ¢ LHS Peg Newman 205. Some moochers began us- ing plastic squids or heochies for the first time. To their surprise they found they work- ed better than herring in some way! Every moocher has had the experience of fecling a hard strike only to pull up empty hooks. A plastic squid or hoochie won't tear off that easily and the fish will either take it farther into its mouth or get hooked on a second pass. True, herring have taste and smell which attract salmon, but the plastic lures can have flavors built into them, too. As they are used more and more, a body of knowledge will con- tinue to grow on the use of them. So, if you're trying them for the first time, don't be afraid to experiment. You may discover some- thing that makes them even more effective. MARK Ill UTI SERVICES BOX 23 — CHRISTINA LAKE, B.C. Rugs & Carpets, Uphholstery, Walls, Vinyls Repaired & Recolored.
