young Steve McQueen. He also
worked on episodes of Kojak,
Movies of the. Week and
Portrait of a Teen-age Alco-
holic, the second-highest-rated
show ever aired on American
television.

“Tm staying within the
comic book, trying to bring it to
life,” he said. “This is strictly
entertainment; there's enough
pain in the world.”

Executive producer Alex-
ander Salkind chose Donner. to
do Superman after his notable
success last year with The
Omen, a film that has grossed
about $100 million worldwide.

The fact that no feature
film of Superman has been done
has a lot to do with D.C, Comics
wanting to preserve the inte-
grity of the product, Donner
said.

“D.C. Comics has the right
to approve every foot of the
film.”

Salkind’s 24-year-old son
Ilya and his childhood friend
Pierre Spengler, 28, both in-
volved in producing the film,
said the biggest problems en-
countered were in obtaining the
