The legal entanglements with their former Oakland landlords behind them, the Raiders won't be travelling from. an Oakland training camp for their games in Los Angeles this season. Even with that impediment in 1982, they won- the division with the best record in the AFC, 8-1. Denver Broncos, meanwhile, could become more com- petitive with an improved passing attack. The Boncos were only 2-7 a season ago. But. this year, (8-6) hired new coaches. Veteran Chuck Knox went to the Seahawks and John Mackovic moved to the Chiefs from an assistant’s job at Dallas. However, tragedy hit the Chiefs during the off-season when running back Joe Delaney drowned in a Louisiana pond while trying to save three youngsters. Los Angeles won its final five season games of 1982 before falling to New York Giahts 17-14. But trouble may be brewing on the Raiders offensive line. stars Art Shell and Gene Upshaw; have retired and Curt Marsh has undergone surgery that could keep him out for the season. On the defensive line, there is nd they have John Elway, the 4 quar- terback who was the top pick in the NFL draft. Baltimore Colts drafted him but Elway ended up with the Broncos by way of a trade when he said he would never sign with the Colts. The Raiders could have a quarterback battle with Jim Plunkett, the most valuable player in the 1981 Super Bowl, challenged again by Marc Wilson. And the club expects another great season from 1981 Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Allen of Southern California, who won 1982 rookie-of-the-year honors. The Chargers (6-9) also made the playoffs and, during the off-season, reached contract agreement with star quarterback Dan Fouts — a multi-year, multi-million- dollar pact.
