VINTNERS — HARVEST CROP “Wine which music is, | : Music and wine are one.” Emerson On Thanksgiving day when all the "good folk, including family members from the coast were at church, I-was communing with Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, and gathering in a different harvest. summons had gone out from the Worshipful Company of Selkirk Vintners to assemble at Selkirk College and harvest and process the grapes from the college vineyards. And. since I too often seemed to be occupied elsewhere, usually at the monastery as I am now, I thought it desirable that I leave my family and my responsibilities to Bunny and do my part in the spirit of the harvest season. Unfortunately for that same harvest, our hot dry summer had not been kind to the vintage and the crop was slim. Furthermore, as Master Vintager Peter Wood reported, mama bear, who has a very good nose and eye for the largest and sweetest fruit, had visited the vineyard with her cubs and had thinned out the crop a great deal more. As a consequence, the bunches of grapes were soon cut from the vines (the grapes are cut from the vines with pruning shears or a sharp knife, not picked) loaded into crates and transported to the home of Master Vintner, Ben Thor-Larsen, crushed in his large and very efficient crusher, and the soggy mess stored in plastic containers to await p and the lete magic of into wine — a much lengthier process. he "s merry in contrast to most of the genre, are worth reading for themselves, and reflect the spirit of the group — a serious “and sober intent behind a humorous eye. Its origins go back to 1962 when George Dubokovic, a former teacher at the college and a skilled viticulturist (expert in grape culture) and oenologist (winemaker) began experimenting with Labrusca vines at his home in Trai In 1968 he obtained cuttings of viniferas (wine grapes) from the Agricultural Research Station in Summerland and planted them in the west courtyard of Selkirk College. In 1972 he obtained 170 vines of various hybrid cultures and planted them in the main vineyard — a terraced slope to the west of the college overlooking the Columbia. At that time The Worshipful Company of Selkirk Vintners was created to be tesponsible for the maintenance of the new vineyards, as well as the -y to the best, varieties for this area, and to maintain contact with federal, provincial ~and other research institutions, and to make information available to the public:~ John Charters... Reflections & recollections Wate HARVEST TIME . . . James Cromwell, Peter Wood and Jack Yolland (top picture, left to right) cut the unches of grapes growing in the Selkirk College vineyard. The grapes are then loaded into crates So far the honorable company has found several varieties to be successful for this climate. They include: Foch — an early ripening black hybrid — very high sugar content. Produces a good burgundy-type wine. Very popular with bears and starlings (the fruit, of course). Siebel 9549 (de Chaunar) — a black European hybrid. Berries below medium size and of fair sugar content. An important commercial variety-in the Okanagan. — medium to small bunches of medium sized white grapes of very ‘high quality. Sylvaner-Madeleine Mauller- Thurgau.
