In fact, if every child Kirkwood nurtured gave their teacher an apple, Castlegar would be knee- deep in Golden Delicious. “I’m already on my second generation of school children,” Kirkwood said, adding that there was something special about teaching the children of her one-time students. “It makes me feel like a grandmother.” But Grandma Kirkwood remembers most of the students she’s taught, not just the second generation. ; For 25 years, Mrs. Kirkwood has meant kindergarten to Castlegar’s kids Glen Freeman NEWS REPORTER It’s been said that the average person changes careers five times before they settle down and choose one. Anyway, school is _ alot more fun these days. “Emphasis used to be placed on the three Rs,” Kirkwood said, “but today the walls have been taken down. We have a combination of learning styles to suit children, from phonics to memorization to whole language skills.” As for the fun part, games and hands-on activities are constantly used to grab kids attention and keep their attention. Kirkwood says that classes are broken into different time slots. On an average day, students would have carpet time (show-and-tell, learning new numbers and sounds), choosing time (paper bag puppets, journal entries), big book time, music time, and so on. “Most of the children just love it.” And the parents of kinder kids love it, too. But Kirkwood says that this year she will be hanging up her ruler and calling it a career. “I have to retire,” Kirkwood said. “I don’t have enough time to do the things I want to do.” What she wants to do is spend more time gardening, curling, golfing, reading, “and I better not forget traveling,” she said. been anxious to travel ever since.
