Wednesday, May 20, 1992 @ @ Wednesday, May 20, 1992 * k.d. lang branches out with Mi lang keeps her critics guessing with most creative offering to date Glen Freeman NEWS REPORTER k.d. lang has taken a lot of heat over her latest album Jn- génue. Critics of the stylish disc say poor k.d. has been seduced by Hollywood, that she has be- trayed her country roots. True, lang’s Ingénue (trans- lated Ingenious) probably won’t turn up in Willie Nel- son’s music collection, but that hardly makes it slop. lang was born and raised in the Prairie town of Consort, Alberta. She soon moved on to big- ger and better, landing hit al- bums in the United States and working with music greats like Roy Orbison. lang was successful not on- ly because she was good, but because she was fun. Ingénue is a great album but it lacks the rambunctious, rowdy spark that has become lang’s trademark, and that’s why it’s not going gold. As usual, lang’s voice is powerful and crisp on this disc. She even shows some of her good old torch and twang on songs like Wash Me Clean, a soulful selection that features a haunting pedal steel guitar that would make Johnny Cash grin with glee. But the strain of country superstardom is certainly showing in Ingénue. In Outside Myself, lang croons “I have been - In a storm of the sun - Basking, senseless to what I’ve be- come,” perhaps wishing that she could return to rural Al- berta. Ingénue But lang knows she’s stuck in the spotlight, and she’s making the best of it by pro- ducing top notch tunes. Songs like Save Me and The Mind ‘of Love are lyrically sound and have thoughtful, memorable tunes, but the piece de résistance of Ingénue is Constant Craving. Craving is a song that will certainly get some air-time on radio stations, and may even pull the album into the Amer- ican Top Forty for a spell. ‘But most of lang’s followers want to two-step their way sil- ly; and for that reason Ingénue is going to leave'a trail of bro- ken hearts. However, contrary to criti- cal belief, lang is not turning her back on country music. She’s showing the world that she is too good to be confined to The Tommy Hunter Show. Ingénue is lang’s most cre- ative album to date. It is a pensive, powerful disc which deserves a bundle of attention. Unfortunately, the majority of the money-wielding, record- buying public wants to be force fed by one hit wonders like Right Said Fred, they don’t want to dine on the inge- nious feast lang has so gra- ciously prepared. Don’t take this album to your Friday night hoedown. But if you want to hear one of the best voices in popular music today, if you want to en- joy an ingenious walk through the mind of a Canadian icon, then put on your head- phones, turn off the lights, and drop Ingénue in the disc ma- chine. Once again, k.d has moved onto bigger and better, and she has invited her listening audience to make the voyage with her. q A | i cement i ee kd. lang’s Ingénue is one disc worth more than a quick spin.
