Pope John Paul made the announcement last week, proclaiming a miracle attrib- uted to her — necessary for canonization or sainthood — has been verified. “We have been waiting a long time for news of that,” said Mother Marguerite Archambault of the Notre Dame order. “The nuns were aware for some time of the pope's intention to canonize Bourgeoys.” Montreal and asked the nuns there to pray. Her doctor, Cajetan Gauth- ier, said'on the night of June 14 and 15 something extra- ordinary happened. “On leaving that evening, I had little hope of seeing her alive the next day,” he said. adding that the last sacra- ments had been given. When he returned to the hospial the next day, he found her alive and smiling. Gauthier underwent surgery, which ‘did not completely remove the maliganant can- cer, but she has since recov- ered. : Bourgeoys, who was born on April 17, 1642, in Toyes, France, also co-founded Mon- treal's first. school. The Congres- sional investigative agency also proposed management and other reforms to speed the.effort.. - - Its suggestions and criti- cisms were contained in an edited report. GAO said the full report included classified security information. No dol- lar amounts were mentioned, “either those being spent or those recommended. Both the United States and the Soviet Union have been conducting research for years on high-energy laser conceptsm. Theoretically, la- ser weapons shooting intense beams of light through space could be used to destroy missile warheads in flight, as well .as satellites and bom- bers. Laser weapons research is part of a wider scientific hunt for what are called “directed- energy” beam devices which GAO said “may revolutionize was in 1950 and the canonization trial, which began in 1978, was based on the healing in 1968 of Lise’ Gauthier, a 21-year-old woman striken with terminal cancer. Gauthier said she and her mother. will attend the cere- monies in Rome. ~ She attributed the miracle to an act of faith on the part of her mother and her father, who died in 1975, towards Bourgeoys after they had watched over her for two weeks following an opera- tion. .
