IT WAS ON APRIL 14,
that the “unsinkable’
Titanic met its tragic fate.

As the ill-fated marvel of
the sea steamed majestically
through the darkness on her
maiden voyage to New York,
more than 2,000 people were
enjoying the’smug comforts of

‘pride of the seas’ crashed the
berg head on amid the deafen-
ing roar. -

“Three precious minutes!
Attention to trivial details and
the big. important opportunity
slipped by until too late,
Sixteen hundred people, in-
cluding’ many notables of two

in the belief that neither wind,
nor storm, nor wave could
‘prevail against them.

ONE OF THE DRAMAT-
ic incidents of that tragic night
is recalled in the Washington
Post:

government-funded B.C. hospitals dilter
from those of the Las Vegas hospital which
has been trying to attract elective surgery

would reduce the workload for B.C... hospl-
tals, reduce.health ministry coste and take
some of the ating out of being healthy.

ceded him. Anyway, I have a
‘copy of Parrot’s message.

IT SAYS. THAT “ALL
locals must be ready”. They
should now have prepared their
strike structure “and, if this has
not yet been done, we strongly
urge these locals that this is
idone without delay.”

CUPW cannot go on strike

legally until it's been through
the conciliation procedure. And
so far the two sides have.not.
even agreed on a board chair-
man, But Parrot tells his people
there is “every indication” a
strike will be necessary and, by
CUPW's standards, it may be.
For example, the uhion went
into negotiations with a modest
241 demands, of which only 19
have been settled.

Some sources in CUPW
believe the leaders are getting
ready to pull the plug, con-
ciliation or no conciliation, the
contract having run out last
June.

From the outside, it is
impossible to peer through that
thicket and discover the truth.
However, Parrot does say in his
statement that every effort will
be made to settle the dispute
through conciliation.

ONE MAN'S WORD

coming from CUPW all indicate

well-organized anti-leadership
group—The Concerned Postal
Workers. These people say
they want a strong union but
not a crazy one. They are
against a‘strike and believe—
rightly—that the public is fed
