Masaru Yanagawa, a Rotary ex- change student from Japan, recently toured newly- restored Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park cemetery. Costtews Photo by John Charters Student visits island By JOHN CHARTERS Masaru Yanagawa, the Castlegar Rotary Club's latest exchange student, paid a visit last week to the newly-restored Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park cem- etery. Yanagawa, a recent grad- uate of a Japanese grammar school in Tokyo, arrived in Castlegar at Easter and was enrolled in classes at Stanley Humphries secondary school. Last month his father, Kunie Yanagawa, a micro- scope manufacturer in Tok- yo, and his mother, Fumiko, paid a brief visit to Castlegar while on a business trip to this continent. His older brother, Takeshi, remained at home to com- plete his degree in business administration. On his return to Japan next spring Masaru will study law. Meantime, like several other Rotary exchange stu- dents, he is using the sum- mer holidays to learn some of the local sports, including fishing and water-skiing. In the winter he hopes to sharpen his downhill skiing skills (he learned on the mountains around Tokyo) and to try his hand at cross-country skiing, a sport not known in Japan. Sports — like many other things — he says, are ex- pensive at home. His skill with spoken Eng- lish is improving steadily with practice and exp heroism for that act.
