surgeon in Thailand has per-
formed what he says is the
first penis transplant in med-
feal history.

An army private received
the penis of a homosxual un-
dergoing a sex change oper-
ation after the soldier's wife
severed his penis in a jealous
rage, Dr. Nit Chayakiarti
said in an interview.

Three surgeons performed
the seven-hour operation at
Bangkok's Police Hospital
three weeks ago, the doctor
said, adding he believes it is
the first successful operation

OAKVILLE, ONT. (CP) — White flecks of snow have
been painted on the canvas with a delicate sensibility and
a sure, steady hand by the budding artist.

The scene depicts a snow-bound cottage in the
wilderness with faint puffs of smoke chugging from the
chimney. A lone fire speckled by falling snow glistens in
the foreground.

Serenity. Peace. Something the 16-year-old painter
hasn't known for some time.

Less than three years ago, the same hand that now
paints scenes of chilling beauty plunged a knife into the
heart of a 13-year-old boy, killing him.

The slaying is not something the young painter likes
to think about, but he says it will always haunt him. He
has lots of time to reflect on his crime — he's serving
three years for murder at the Syl Apps Youth Centre, a
maximum security institution for the worst of Ontario's
young criminals.

His sentence is the most severe permitted under the
controversial Young Offenders Act. Under the act, which
became law in 1984, three years in secure custody — to be
served in a youth version of jail — can only be given for
crimes that would mean life imprisonment for an adult.

NOT ENOUGH

“Sometimes I don't think three years is enough,” the
teenage murderer said in an interview at the centre. “It
could happen again. It’s not impossible.”

“But I'm going to make sure it doesn’t.”

His uncertainty about his future and remorse for his
crime is something he grapples with daily. It's a feeling
he shares with many of the older youths at the centre
—including sex offenders, armed robbers and thieves.

“I think about the kid a lot,” he says of his victim. “I
regret it. I'm pissed off about why I did it. I was angry. I
was .
“Sometimes I'm in the middle of doing things and I
stop and think about it. That'll happen to me for the rest
of my life. I just won't let it get to me too much.”

More than 4,000 youths between the ages of 12 and
17 are committed to secure custody in Canada each year,
says the Canadian Centre for the Justice Statistics, the
only organization that keeps tabs nationally on youth
crime.

HARD TO FIND

But just how many teenagers are locked up annually
for serious crimes — murder, sexual assault and offences
involving weapons — is difficult’ to discover. Although
Ottawa oversees the Young Offenders Act, each province
administers the act in its own way.

charged with murder and 60 others with sexual assault
with a weapon. Those totals don’t include Ontario, which
did not make statistics available.

However, administrators agree the number of
serious crimes committed by teenager's is increasing. In
British Columbia alone, -three adult—jails have been
converted to children’s centres since the Young
Offenders Act came into effect.

There are currently four murderers at the Syl Apps
centre. They include a 16-year-old who shot a family of
three last year and a teenager who was found out guilty
by reason of insanity in the strangling of two children in

centre, named after a former Toronto Maple Leafs
hockey star who was Ontario corrections minister in the

“But it's a high expectation. We're not asking for
psychotherapy or anything, but we just hope we trigger a
bit more awareness of why they do what they do.”

Close says it’s a breakthrough when the ome “take
ownership” of their crimes —. social work jargon for
admitting responsibility for what they did. But
rehabilitation of youth criminals is difficult with the short
sentences most teens are given, she says.

“We're basically a training school, and control is
important.”

Ruth Collins-Nakai’s family,
but her decision to make
medicine a career was “spon-
taneous.”

The 38-year-old pediatric
eardiologist — a specialist in
treating children with heart
problems — said she made a
“spur of the moment” de-
cision to apply to medical
school when some university
friends submitted their ap-
plications.

Collins-Nakai’s parents,
both her grandfathers and
several uncles were doctors.

and motherhood has been a
juggling act since the chil-
dren were born, especially
when Collins-Nakai was on
call at the hospital.

“There were many times
that I'd go home and nurse a
baby in the middle of the
night and come back here and
work on an emergency.”

Her decision to take on the
association presidency came
after some soul-searching
about the effect on her family
and her patients.

“We talked about it as a
family before I took it on and
decided we could deal with

it,” she said.

They never go anywhere unescorted, face routine
body searches and are locked in their bedrooms at night.
After meals, a staff member carefully counts the cutlery
to make sure none has been stolen.

“It's not a great place to grow up,” Close says.

That's a sentiment echoed by most of the kids
confined in the centre. Of the dozen interviewed, most
said they are just “putting in time.” They don’t like the
constant surveillance and being forced into “institutional
garbage relationships” with other young criminals.

“The first night Iwas here was the scariest night of
my life,” ‘says Gregg — not his real name — who is
serving several months for a series of car thefts. He says
his welcome to the centre was not a pleasnt one. “It was
just like being in a penitentiary.”
After getting a routine scrub-down in the shower, he

robbers —and shown his room. Then he was locked in for
the night.

Since hten, all he’s wanted is out. But like the young
murderer who can’t be sure he won't kili again, Gregg
can't predict what will happen to him when he gets out.

None of the inmates can.

Eighteen-year-old Alex — again, not his real name —
raped a little girl and is now serving two years for sexual
assault. When the huge, musclear youth finishes his
sentence next year, he'll rejoin his family in suburban
Toronto.

“I feel sorry for the first persion who messes with me
outside,” he says. “I'll bring the beating on them so hard.”

The centre doesn't keep track of repeat offenders,
but released youths have been returned after committing
further crimes. David Mason, the director of youth
custody services for central Ontario, sees all the
youngsters who are eventually sent to Syl Apps.

“Some of these kids have been social-worked to
death,” he says. They've either had lengthy crime
histories or been abused — sexually, physically or
emotionally — by adults and been sent to live in group
homes.

Mason says the future of youth criminals is only as
bright as they want to make it for themselves.

“We're not God, we can't make miracles,” he says,
adding there’s no way to predict which youths will benefit
from being in secure custody.

Helen McKinnon Doan, 48,
who has documented her
findings in the book Every
Woman — Adapting to Mid-
life Change (published by
fpddart), says “most women
see menopause as a marker, a
chance to-move on to some-
thing else in their lives.”

Unfortunately, Doan adds,
many myths about meno-
pause may be affected by its
newness as a concept,” she
says. “A century ago, the
average life expectancy was
so low that the majority of
European and American
women did not live long
enough to experience meno-
pause.”

gynecologist Edward Tilt,
who thought woman began to
look masculine: “Bones either
stick out or are sunken in fat
and their skin gets flabby and
tweezers are sometimes re-
quired to remove stray hairs
from their face.

Tilt also reported that
during menopause women
are more susceptible to men-
tal illness, such as morbid
irrationality, minor forms of
hysteria, depression, impul-
ses to drink liquor, steal and
murder.

“Even today, I hear myths
surrounding menopause,”
says Doan. “Unfortunately,
these myths are the primary
source of beliefs about meno-
pause and they can poten-
tially affect the expectations,
fears and attitudes about
menopause for the woman as
well as members of her
family and cOmmunity.”

In order for these myths to
disappear, she says, much
more education and aware-
ness is needed not only for
women in middle age but also
their husbands, children and
others in their lives.

In her interviews, Doan
found that most working
women have a less difficult
time with menopause, al-
though some do experience
debilitating pain and stress.

What intrigued Doan was
how women cope with such
menopausal symptoms as hot
flashes.

Hot flashes and changes in

menstrual patterns have
been directly linked to lower-
ing levels of estrogen.

operations in the northern and southern interior of British Columbia
The Hazelton Operations of Westar Timber are comprised of two saw
mills, associated woodlands and a coastal log handling facility

The division is searching for a Junior Accountant to be responsible for
inventory control of lumber production, and other general accounting
duties. This is a key position on the accounting team and provides
opportunity for career advancement

Candidates should have completed the 2nd or 3rd level of a CGA or

RIA program with 2 years related experience. The successful applicant
will have superior communication and interpersonal skills. Familiarity
with the forest industry would be an asset
