Week number three of the Budweiser Country Talent Search was now underway to seck out two finalists to represent our - province at the National Finals to be staged in Hamilton, Ontario, on the weekend of Sept. 13. Backstopped by the talented house band, San Jose West, five enthusiastic hopefuls mounted a serious bid to be chosen the best performer of the night with their sights aimed at sharing the over $70,000 worth of cash and promo- tional prizes, that includes up to 50 hours of studio time, (enough to record a single, including all tape costs and engineer), a Concept video produced by CFIC TV 7, to be used as a vehicle to promote the newly recorded single, thousands of dollars worth of cash in the Canadian competition in Hamilton, and much much more. The first place winner will also receive, in addition to the $10,000 in cash, a performance opportunity in front of thousands of country music fans at the Big Valley Jamboree in Craven, Saskatchewan, in July, 1992, and a trip to the home of country music, Nashville, Tennessee to appear on Nashville Now. But before these dreams can become reality, these aspiring per- formers must first make it through eight weeks of open competition and then onto the local finals April 18 and 25. The competition is held every Thursday evening at Banjos Pub. If you are interested in com- peting call 365-6933 for further __information. The show was underway. Castlegar’s Sandra Roos was contestant numero uno, and opened ber audition with a Loretta Lynn number. Nervous at first, she settled down and poured her heart and soul into A Coal Miner's Daughter followed by a good solid effort of the Judds smash hit, Grandpa, that she dedicated to ber grandfather, Second on the. entertainment roster was Crescent Valley's Sid * Bridges performing Roger Miller’s King of the Road, and George Strait’s Amarillo by Morning. ‘Wally Gleboff of Castlegar, while straying from the country format, received excellent revues from the crowd with his vocal versions of Otis Reddings’ Dock of the Bay, and the Rolling Stones’ Paint it Black. Slocan Park resident, Tom Pawlin, accompanied his vocal set with some good acoustic guitar numbers, But in any there During the course of the com- petition what became evident was that no matter how serious the competitors were, having fun was still a priority. “You've got to have fun, win or lose,” said Morison, “once you're in, get at it. I'm kind of happy to win, and if I can keep this up, I'd like to record some tunes and origi- nal material.” This is the fifth year of the com- petition, and it has grown to encompass 15 venues and 12 radio stations throughout the province. Locally the Castlegar Sun, Radio Station 760 CKQR, and host Ban- jos Pub are involved in the spon- sorship of this talent search. ., The talent search is sanctioned. 2 by the B.C, Country Music Associ- ation, and the Canadian Country Music Association. This year, some of the rules have changed in the quest to improve the event. Since the talent search is administered by the B.C.C.M.A., organizers feel that it is only fair that the Association be supported in its efforts to promote and develop country music at its roots and that is why all competitors must be a member of the B.C-C.MLA.
