BLAZED UP AGAIN Wind Fans thé Smoldering’ Embers of Sandon Into Flames. QUENCHED BY THE FIREMEN Bafoge of the People Narrowly Escapes De- atruction—Funeral of the Fire Viotin—Aid frem the Provincial Government—Liberal Holp Moots the Emergency. (Special to the Record.) Kaslo, May. 6,—The fifteen or twenty houses and stores which are all that remain of fire-swept Sanden had a narrow shave from being destroyed by fire last night. The tuins of the C. P. R. station blazed “up. Fanned by a strong wind, which came furiously whistling up the gulch, some of the half burned material got strongly. alight. The firemen, who had been work- ing almost without a break for 48 hours, had to turn out again‘in full force. They had a hard fight to save the buildings in the -upper end of town, in which were huddled scores of families. Prompt action was all that saved the remainder of the city. Miles Romabough, the Southfinch, Ontario, man, who was burned to death, was buried in Sandon ceme- tety this afternoon. Premier Joseph Martin, who was speaking in Greenwood on the night of the fire, wired for full de- tails and today the provincial gov- ernment deposited $500 in the Bank of Montreal at New Denver for the relief of Sandon. The prompt and large-hearted way in which the outside towns helped has enabled the relief com- miteeto meet the emergency fully. a RELIEF FOR SANDON. ‘Total From lodge in Rossland, and the comimi tee on arrangements is making every effort to assure the visiting sales on the local exchange today, RGSSLAND EVENING RECORD, MAY 7. 1900.__ delegates a pleasant: stay.
