Arrows. . pon Out at first - the Nelson A's came from behind in the game to get to the semis versus The weather knew how impor- tant the game was. It was hot and muggy last Sun- day, and the clouds hovered low over the main field at Kinnaird park. While the action between Banjos and the B.C. Arrows was hot, the breeze started flowing at 5 p.m., cooling off the fans. Banjo’s got off to an early start, scoring a run in top of the first Lyle Stoushnow was hit home on a fly to centre by Jim Nazaroff. The Arrows got the run back in the bottom of the inning, with lead-off batter O.J. Jack getting home on an error by Banjo’s short stop Darcy Dixon. After sending six hitters to the plate in the first, the game settled down in to a pitchers duel. Arrow pitcher Terry “T-Bone” Bone and g Banjo’s pitcher Eli Soukeroff threw three-up three-down in the second and third. T-Bone worked through a pulled groin muscle in the early innings to get into form. Both pitchers gave a lesson in almost perfect fastball throwing. An error by Arrows first-base- man Dean Martin cost the team a run, but the lead didn't last. The Arrow got the run back in the bot- tom of the inning on a single by the Arrows second baseman. The game fell back into a } pitchers duel, and the score 4 remained tied into the bottom of the seventh. After Hawk flied. out to right, the top of the Arrows batting order came up. O.J. was up. “Eli's an effective pitcher, but m he wants to get ahead early. You | tee up on the first pitch in the ’ Guy Bertrand gets ready for the almost unhittable pitch | of Arrows’ hurler T-Bone 4 later innings, and we tried to cash in on that,” said Dean Martin, coach of the Arrows. Arrows and sent it out of the park. “As soon it was off the bat, it was out,” said Terry Taranoff, Banjo’s coach and bagman num ber three. “If we got him out, we were going to extra innings.” Martin said the win was satis fying, and tough. “The defense on both teams played steady, and it came down to one big blow.” The man responsible for that blow took home the MVP award, while T-Bone, with a 3-1 record, was the tourney’s best pitcher. Darcy Dixon from Banjo’s took the batting title, hitting .600 on the weekend. Taranoff said the breaking point for Banjo’s was the first inning. Banjo’s had loaded the bases, and had only one out, but they could only get one run across the plate. “We had a really good chance in the first, but we couldn't cash it in,” he added. Though he hates losing, Taranoff said there was no shame in losing to the Arrows. “They're a good team, a super team. I'm not ashamed of losing to them.” Next year will be the last to see the Arrow in action. They're hanging up the cleats after 16 years. The Arrows are a B.C institution that spend the summer travelling to ball tourneys across North America. The infield hasn't changed in 14 years, there are three Martin brothers on the team, two of their sons, and the two Jacks are uncles. The tourney was organized by the Banjo’s team, and Taranoff said it was a great success. “The fans were great, it was a super weekend. Fifteen years ago I saw fans like this,” he said. vs Valley Royals Castlegar Merchants Nelson A's Kootenay Combines Castlegar Merchants Kootenay Combines B.C.
