It has an interesting effect. Both shows finish Nov. 19. At the NEC from Novy. 24 to Christmas Eve, there will be an acrylic painting showing by Colette Nilson. She reveals an involvement with the visual elements, while express- ing strong personal feelings for her subject matter. It’s a real treasure! Twenty-five per cent of this amount will go to the library fund Talking of the library fund, the rides on the hot air balloon at Kinsmen Park raised nearly $600 for the library. Fast -s amount would have been more if not for heavy winds that cancelled the trips for some hours. It was great to see the view of Castlegar from this brightly-colored balloon, making Us appreciate the beauty of our mountains and rivers. Vancouver galleries If you visit Vancouver and would like to see some private art galleries, did you know there is a Gallery Row on South Granville where nine art galleries show some of the best contemporary works? Latest statistics from administrator Deb at the Castlegar and District Heritage Society office show 5,900 visitors signed the guest register at Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park/Chapel House and 6,200 signed at the Railway Station Museum to date in 1995. Many of the hours previously filled by staff hired through programs no longer avail- able have been covered admirably by community volunteers, who chalked up 3,000 hours enabling theSe two premier Castlegar attrac- tons to remain open to the public. The Society and the City of Castlegar owe a big thanks to Pam Jensen,Joanna Lorimer, Shirley Owen, Tina Freer and Becki Nixon who, working in conjunction with Volare Enterprises and the Koote- nay Society for Community Living, maintained the grounds at the Island Park and kept up the Chapel House as well as acting as hostesses throughout the year. And, of course, our regular Society members and board of directors who keep the CDHS operating year after year with little or no recognition for their heroic efforts. I had the opportunity to do a quick ‘tour’ of ZIHP and the Tauseum in mid-October with my cousin Sandra Lamontagne, a Saskatchewan artist. In her hometown of Rockglen, they also have an old CP Rail station which is operated on a volunteer basis for display and sale of local crafts. She was most impressed with our success here Though she had visited Castlegar area several times, she was astounded to discover we have a “real island” Open to locals and visitors year-round. The day we visited, the park was glowing with autumn colors set against the i blue of the river, and framed by the mountains. It was a picture to please the eye of anyone, artist or otherwise. There are songs from The Cure, The The, White Zombie, Cocteau Twins and Leftfield. Silvestri’s soundtrack score (cuts 6-12) is dramatic and well played by The Sinfonia of London. Key tracks: The The’s “When Darkness Falls” and Cocteau Twins’ “Need-Fire”. Don’t let a so-so movie tum you off a fine disc. CONGO Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Epic) EK 67266 This is from the movie based on a Michael Crichton novel. The music, tense and dramatic, is a good match for the story. Congo's music reminds me of Mikey’s other movie, Jurassic Park, done by John Williams. But the music here is Jerry Goldsmith all the way. I'd bet the rent you've heard his stiff in offier films. The vocal cut is “Spirit of Africa” by Lebo M, last heard on one of the “Lion King” discs. Key tracks: “Deep Jungle” and “Spirit of Africa” High fives to Goldsmith for a solid piece of work. JOHNNY MNEMONIC Music from the Motion Picture (Columbia) CK 66909 toe I guess Keanu Reeves can't carry a movie all by his lonesome. The movie died fast and hard, but this is a hot soundtrack. Johnny Mnemonic is far and away the best of this week's tracks. As with Judge Dredd, the movie will fare better on video than ROCK it did on the silver screen. The tunes? This one has stuff from Stabbing Westward, Cop Shoot Cop, Helmet, Orbital, KMFDM, Rollins Band, God Lives Underwater, Bono & The Edge and Brad Fiedel. From all angles, this one pret- ty much has it all. Key tracks: “I See Through” (Rollins Band) and “3am Incident” (Cop Shoot Cop). If the movie is only half as good as the music in it, Johnny Mnemonic should be a lot of fun. LET YOUR DIM LIGHT SHINE Soul Asylum (Columbia) CK 57616 eee14 The follow-up to Grave Dancer’s Union has been out for a few months and is doing quite nicely. Why not? It’s a good disc. This electric mid-tempo folk/country/rock is an easy concoction to get into. Vocalist/guitarist Dave Pirner is still very much in control, writing most of the tunes himself and the success of the last album guarantees an audience for this one. These almost don’t feel so much like songs as they do short, dramatic stories set to music. Maybe that’s the desired effect. Key tracks: “Misery” and “String of Pearls”. This is the sort of album you'll find yourself liking for quite awhile. GREATEST HITS Lorrie Morgan (BNA) 07863 66508-2 eee My favorite kind of country, a “Hits” collection. This puts 11 of Lor- rie’s best/most known songs on one disc for maximum value, You can’t turn on NCN or TNN without Seeing a Lorrie Morgan video, so the old show-biz axiom must be true; nothing sells like death. It was after the tragic loss of her drunkard husband Keith Whitley that Lorrie Morgan's records really started to sell. But heck, she’s pretty and she follows in the footsteps of Tammy Wynette.... at least the vibe. Lots of cryin’ in yer beer songs and a sweet set 0° Pipes will make this country gold. Keys: “Five Minutes”, “What Part of No”. She's a nice gal with a solid grip on country values. If you don’t already have her music, this disc is a fine way to get to know Lorrie Morgan. Good job, volunteers! In a recent note to this colum- nist, Marjorie West, daughter of one of Castlegar's first pioneer families—the T. Bloomers—says, “Where the Columbia and Koote- nay Rivers met (looking back many years) there was a definite line at one time; the Columbia being very blue and the Kootenay was greenish in color.” West has witnessed most of the history of” Castlegar in her 92 years and her memories, too, are seen through the eyes of an artist For more area history, don’t forget to pick up a Community Heritage Calendar at the station museum at the foot of Third Street downtown 2nd Place - Medallion and $75 Joe Fowler - Vernon Ist Place - Medallion and $100 Bea Hassler - Vernon CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION 3rd Place - Leo Ready - Kam loops 2nd Place latch Ist Place Oyama Mable Vogt - Pot Bob Montgomery fo, | 8 Alan Trieber Vitamin D is important in helping maintain calcium levels.
