Concrete section of the dam, right, will rise 500 feet above the riverbed and will be about 1,500 feet long. An earthfill wing dam with a creat length of 3,800 feet, left, ell extend along the terrace on the west bank of the canyon. The powerhouse will be built in the riverbed immediately downstream from the dam. It will have an ultimate capacity of 2.7 million The Good Citizen of the Year award for 1976 was a joint presentation to the husband- * and-wife team of Bob and Marjorie MacBain, who were hosted at a special banquet Tuesday evening sponsored by the Castlegar Kiwanis Club. The following is the pres- entation made by club member: Merv Rush in introducing the MacBains as Good Citizens of - the Year: What do we mean—"Citi- zen of the Year” or perhaps it- ‘should be citizen of the years. I believe we mean someone who has said “I cannot live in a community without becoming involved". A good citizen is concerned: about’ others. ‘The Romans had a word for it— Altruism - concerned with others. The company. said _Monday initial © estimates indicate the loss could run into several million dollars. It is fully covered by . insurance. H. F. Huff, senior vice- president, pulp marketing, said the fire would not disrupt the company’s European pulp mar- keting program, as the des- troyed terminal was one of several used to maintain pulp inventories in Europe. Tonight, it is my pleasure and honor to present to you our most recent Citizens of the Year, Marj and Bob MacBain. Marj and Bob—this is your life: James Robin MacBain— Born in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father was in the British Army and travelled with his family to Gibralter, Malta, Alexandria, and Aden. In March 1939, Bob joined the RAF. and in 1941 he was posted to Medicine Hat, Alta. as part of: the Commonwealth Air Training Program. One day, while on leave in the city of Nelson, he met a | lovely Swedish lass by the name of Marjorie Louise Jor- gensen and before she knew it, they were married and he’ had + wisked her off to Medicine Hat. In 1944, Bob was posted back to England and Marj re- turned lo wait out the war in Nelson. Bob returned home in 1946 and joined WKP&L in 1947 and, of course, is still with -them. Marj_and. Bob have three children, all married: Bonnie and John Thomp- Icy Roads Blamed for Accident Last Thursday's snowfall turned road surfaces slick with local RCMP reporting two ac- eidents with damages totalling $1,800. A .car driven by Orla Granstrom of Castlegar was following a school bus> on Columbia Ave. at 8:30 a.m. in the 1900 block when the: bus suddenly pulled off the road. Police say it was: too slippery “for the Granstrom vehicle to stop. It skidded and. | collided. with a. car driven by. During this time, he built the. squadron to one of the best in Canada.
