In January of this year, I made a resolution to balance my checkbook every month when the statement comes in. In years past, I have resolved the problem by switching banks every time I don't balance. No error was too large or too small for me to close out the account and take my business down the street. Phoenix isa big city, In the telephone directory, there are « five yellow pages listing banks and three and a half pages of savings and loans. I'm down to my last two banks. Last month when I tallied up my deposits, withdrawals, and outstanding ehecks I was off 19 cents ... in the bank's favor, of course. I would rather be off $500 than 19 cents. ‘Try that with 19 cents and they'll laugh themselves into a hernia repair. The only way you can find a 19-cent error is to devote the rest of your life to it, like the fella who slip-covered the Grand Canyon or rode a bicycle across the United States backwards, It's a situation you either accept or fight. I chose to pick up the gauntlet. Every night after dinner for the last three weeks I have trudged to the dining room table, turned on the calculator, and gone over every figure from the beginning. For all of you bookkeeping quarterbacks, I did not: a) Make a 7 like a 9. b) Forget to deduct a bank charge. c) Record a check on a breath mint and eat it. d) Subtract instead of add a 19-cent deposit. e) Forget I couldn't subtract nine from zero without borrowing one, f) Record my checks in round numbers. g) Write a check for $1.76 and record it for $1.57. This morning, I knew what I had to do. I got in the car and drove to the last institution in Phoenix that has never had iz an account in my name — the Godfather Savings and Loan, It's a rather unique institution. There are no wine glass premiums. The tellers are all men and have cotton stuffed in their cheeks. The entire bank is on wheels attached toa truck. But their brochure said, "No more balancing a checkbook! We tell you how much you've got!" The piece of mind is worth 19 cents. Care needed during woodtick. season Woodtick season is upon us again, advises Dr. R.T. Pagan, acting medical health officer of the West Kootenay - Health District. Even though the Rocky Mountain woodtick is capable of causing muscle paralysis, and occasionally death, there is no cause for alarm, and children should not be stopped from their normal outdoor activities. However, they should be examined for ticks each night. As a pre- cautionary measure, trousers or slacks ‘should be tucked into boots on outings and hikes. Ticks can be found al- most anywhere — in open country, in the woods, or even in your own garden. When they find a human being to feed on, they head for cover, usually in the hair, or around the neck or groin. Their initial bite is pain- less so, unless. a search is made each day, it could be. five or six days before they are noticed. By that time, the victim may start showing signs of numbness, difficulty in walking, ete. Locating the tick and removing it will result in the victim's im- mediate return to full health. Removal is easily ac- complished by grasping the tick's hard-shell body be tween thumb and forefinger or with tweezers, and giving a steady pull. The head will not come off as is the case with some ticks in other regions: The ticks are tough little blighters, so they should be disposed of with care; otherwide they'll be back for more. Senator scratched ‘in attack on cats The fur can really fly when cat lovers get their backs up, state Senator James Gallagher of Iowa has discovered. He's been getting hate mail ever since he began talking about a bill to require motorists who injure or kill a domestic animal to “make a reasonable effort to deter- mine the owner of the an- imal.” “I can see stopping (a car) for a dog,” Gallagher said. “But a cat? I don't know. You squish a cat and go on.” But indignant cat own- ers may have the last word, Some of their comments: “We have a darling cat. She is more to us people's kids are to them.” e “Cm writing this letter to tell you how furious I am over your lack of respect for my cat.” e “Why don’t you intro- duce a bill... (which) would allow the squishing of waste- ful state senators without any liability?” minute..: CHENTRE ENERGY FAMILY RESTAURANT FRANCHISE AVAILABLE AT NELSON IN LARGE SHOPPING CENTRE For further information Please Call: Mr. Ken Prather _ (403) 243-7687 ane, KEN PRATHER Hannigans Hamburgers Suite.303, 4723 - ist St. S.W. Answer: 4 No it does not. Fluoride, in appropriate concentration, -is a nutrient for the teeth, making them more resistant to theacid waste products of decay causing bacteria, This public health measure has unfortunately become a pol- itical entity, with the chil- dren who benefit most, un- able to vote (disinfranchised), and the adults who can vote arguing on an emotional level. Thus one antifluorida- tionist can misinterpret stat- istics between two cities and claim that the one with fluor- -idated water has a higher incidence of cancer-related deaths, and neglect to point out that the same city hss a. significantly older population base. The willingness of peo- ple to believe the worst of organized public health mea- sures is a puzzle and rep- resents a triumph of quack- ery over medical science. Question: Why save children’s teeth? Won't they fall out er: f Yes, children’s teeth are shed naturally, but only when the body is ready to replace it with an adult tooth. : Dental health month jentures, Should’) Hi T ‘still see the dentist. for. regular checkups?") | |. Answer: : sels Nes Yes you should, for sev- eral reasons. One is that ° removal of natural teeth allows the residual.bone to shrink. ‘This is accelerated when pressure is put on the. bone, such as with chewing: on dentures during ‘eating. This, then, leads to col- lapse of the bite and the need for corrective braces in the future. That is why a dentist will often recommend a space maintainer if a baby tooth must be removed. Question: When I last had an aching molar, my dentist re- fe me for root canal treatment. Wouldn't it have been easier to pull it? Answer: ve When it comes to health, easiest is not always the best. In fact, it would be much easier to prevent that tooth from aching through proper home care and regular visits to your family dentist. Even if the tooth does become painful, removing the in- fected pulp inside ‘the tooth, when possible, is preferrable to amputating the whole tooth, ‘ This is -because the - tooth, if properly treated, can function for a lifetime after root canal treatment.
