By J.A. CHARTERS The ‘Appian Way. they call it at the abbey — a gently humorous reference to the famous and historic highway of Imperial Rome. This ‘Appian Way’ is, however, a more modest structure — a steeply winding road built of great, rough rocks, which has its beginnings up near where the abbey, white-walled and red-roofed, looks across the broad valley of the Fraser River. From here it winds its way down the precipitous hillside and through the birch and conifer woods to the carpenter shop and the highway below. Brother Joseph, an elderly Swiss monk built it, they told me, as a short cut from the abbey to the lower buildings, and he built it all by himself. Two metres wide, it is, and about 200 metres long. Every day when he had a few minutes free from his many other duties, they said, one could find him working on the road with his beat-up old tractor. It had a special significance for him, though he never said what it was — but he certainly meant it to last a long time. There is a new, gracefully curving blacktop road to the abbey now and the Appian Way is grass-grown and slippery with a litter of fallen leaves, and used only for light tractors and foot-traffic. Oddly enough, there is a step at the bottom of the old road, about two metres from the highway. It is only a six-inch drop but it feels like a leap into piety: Brother Joseph. is no longer. working on that Several years ago one Good Friday morning he failed for ee first time in his life t6 appear in the church for ‘the early Mass. Don't worry about it,” I mumbled trying to hide my embarrassment while my other companions tried to conceal their grins. As Henry continued once more, ‘my discomfort passed and I concentrated on what Henry was saying. . “Once the door had been closed behind me, I turned into the hall and headed for the senior dormitory. At the supose end of the hall, I saw an elderly couple speaking. with th rector. At any othér time, I would have assumed that they were guests and would have left it at that; but, by the tone of their voices, I could tell that they were upset about something. I thoug't you said that a dreamer could do what he wanted in his dream?” demanded Henry, with the others agreeing with him by nodding vigorously, “You're right!” I gulped, but quickly thought of a way to. cover my near-mistake, ; “This is the point where religious and moral convictions. play their. part. Some people can do innumerable wrongs against morality in their dreams because they lack any such convictions; but, those of us who do have religious and moral beliefs are against anything that violates them,” I preached, noticing with relief that I had redeemed myself. “In your experience, Henry, your beliefs might have interfered with your dream, causing you to return the car. This in turn could have been part of your dream, meant as a confirmation of your deep-held belief that stealing is wrong. You do believe that stealing is wrong, don't you?” I asked, suddenly worried that I had made another mistake. . “You know I do. Are you finished yet?” Honry asked, now obviously anxious to get it over with. . t “Almost,” I replied, using my ‘tone of wisdom’ on re. “The second reason for your dream was y zeae. have social standing among your peers — that evidenced by the fact that you wanted to show Carla and I are car.
