CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, May 15, 1958 Tarrys Centennial Banquet Fetes Oldtimers The Tarrys Centennial gath- -ering of Oldtimers Saturday was so well attended two banquet sittings were necessary to accom- ‘date the many guests. Oldtimers cume’ from many B.C. points to renew friendships, hear speeches, listen to a pro- &ram and enjoy feasting on borsh, eerohi, ploy and blintsi, The gathering was held in the renovated Community Hall — originally the school house. ‘The renovation was the cen- tennial project for Tarrys and the building was simoff arrived in Thrums in 1911, He recalled that at that time there were only four Doukhobor famllles living in the district — the Abrossim- offs, Ribalkins, Chernoffs and Sherstibitoffs, Sam Konkin the Schlavon, Montgomery, Randall, Main, Barker, Macmillan, Wal- lace, Irving, Chalmers, Wike, Dodd, Pratt, Hooper and others. I have often wondered, Well, according te local rumor, it isn't going to be long before we have a chance to find out. Rumor also has it that we will not only get ‘the low-down on the week, may’ I be excused. It is turtles in his locker, 1 know what they turn into on dry land. And as for what mermaids] 4 wear at the bottom of the sea — well, slacks are out anyway. If my reflections are a bit “naughtical” side this on Davy's locker but the boys! probably the results of a series will also have the opportunity to cast a wicked eye over Minnie the Mermaid and that muscle man, Popeye the Sailor. of events of which the Commo- dore’s Ball and being part owner of-an ‘almost ready to Yaunch’ eabin cruiser is not the least. The have a fer- I'm all for this sailor idea myself and if the Arrow Boat Club decides to turn the boys into sailors for the evening, you can just bet all thé nice girls in town will be walking the plank to get there. Despite the fact that this is supposedly a dry land cruise — and I have great doubts about the dryness — it will no doubt give the deck hands ample op- portunity to test their sea legs. Speaking of legs, have you ever wondered why sailors wear bell bottom trousers? Well, so have I and the Boss has just now in- formed me that the reason isn’t glamorous at all and would I kindly get my mind off sailors and hoat clubs and start cooking dinner. A bit unreasonable I'd say, considering that this will be the first Annaul Commodore's Ball prt on by the Arrow Boat Club, and also considering that the members have worked like gal- Jey slaves. in preparstion for this occasion. As I understand it, this Is to be quite a gala affair and every Jack Tar to the Com- modere will no doubt do his share towards splicing the main brace. Another fine feature about a.ball like this is that there will ‘be so many handsome navy men around (they can't be squares all the time). What a uniform does to the female heant is pretty terrific. Even a husband of long standing takes on that certain . Something when he dons a pair of white sneakers and a yachting cap — ‘whatever else he may wear really doesn’t matter. And’ the ladies, bless ‘em, won't even have to buy a new gown — I've heard that sailors like them almost any way ex- cept in slacks mainly because, as the Boss snapped at me again, the fore looks pretty trim but aft reminds him of a round bot- tom scow floating downstream broadside. Some people are just natur- ally miserable and it is better to ignore such remarks com- Pletely. However, while I am still reflecting on the subject, there is just one thing more. If Davy Jones keeps snapping vent hope that my curiosity con- cerning Davy Jones’ Locker will not be satisfied, at least while they are aboard. Robyn Receives Many Gifts Eremenko's.
