AND NEXT By RAY ARGYLE The Supreme Court ot. Canada has once again re- jected complaints’ of ob- scenity against certain magazines _ widely. sold throughout Canada. | This latest | deci- ; ‘ sion. keeps i intact the &- Bi te turning down every @ single com- plaint of this nature since Can- ada’s new obscenity Jaw went into effect four years ago. The decisions, however, have not deterred local authorities from continuing their efforts to deprive the Public of publications or motion pictures which they think should be suppressed. + In Alberta and Saskatche- wan, for instance, the en- tire’ adult population has been deprived of the privi- lege:of enjoying what is probably the finest motion . Picture of the year, Tom - Jones, In Toronto, a Jocal mag- ante Hog railed the 18th. cen class Fanny Hill to be obscene.” Censorship of another sort has’ been threatened from Parliament as a result of complaints against anti- Jewish hate sheets dis. : tributed by a misguided 19-year-old Ontario youth. kk ok In the case of the Tom . Jones movie, the distribut- ing company refused to cut sections ‘which provincial authorities’ had regarded as obscene and decided just ‘not to show the movie in either Saskatchewan or lberta. In view of the Supreme Court’s consistent refusal . to accept obscenity charges under our exisiting laws, one must wonder why vari- .Ous local authorities across the country continue to Press for conyictions of this type.g 0 Seldom, if ever, do such authorities enjoy any gen- eral public support in their efforts to decide on their own what is best for the Public, Laws relating to morality and censorship are prob- ably among the most diffi. - cult to enact and enforce in present-day society. This is because Western society in general is going through a revolutionary change in attitudes toward traditional morality. It is not that morality, as some charge, is break- ing down. It is that atti- tudes and standards, based on a more realistic out- look to life in general, are changing ‘accordingly. Literary and movie censorship is not the only storm centre of the forces - now buffeting our tradi- tional moral attitudes. a ey It is still illegal in Can- | ada, for instance, to sell birth contro] devices for the express purpose of birth control. Instead, they must be sold in the. guise of health protection, which is a good example of the hypocrisy still prevailing in our sexual attitudes, Canada’s divorce _ and abortion laws still remain as relics of a puritan age. They would be modified: tomorrow if the public were allowed to make a demo- eratic choice in the matter. RS EGS There is probably no single law, however, which is more stupid or. self- defeating than Canada’s aw, concerning drug addic- ion, . ‘The law as it now. stands serves only one purpose— it permits immense prof- iteering by underworld drug traffickers just as prohibition laws ~ served only the interests of boot- leggers. This is the kind of “morality” we can. do without. ‘ A DRINK AT LEAST. ° During the stormy debates on the proposed Canada Pension Plan at the Federal-Provincial Conference in Quebec City, Quebec Premier Jean Lesage Proved he was at least willing to give Health and Welfare Minister Judy LaMarsh some co-operation in regard to her thirst, if not on her proposed national pension scheme. English teachers have the same-sort of holiday a bus driver would have if he were given a week off and told he was to drive a bus from Hailfax to Vancouver. in the next seven days, When the holidays began, I had ‘examination papers to mark which represented a total of about 480 student writing hours, (They could have produced the works of Shakespeare in the same time.) This, in turn, means that I have about 100 hours of marking time. No complaints, It’s part of the job. But things were a little more complicated this year. The women of the house came down with ‘flu, just'as the “holidays” began. The result was that, in- stead of sitting quietly in my study, and having countless cups of tea: and coffee, innumerable beers. . and sandwicher brought me, to keep me going, I found myself trotting up and down stairs about six hours of each day, bearing up tempting little things on trays, bearing down dirty dishes.
