LET US PUT BUSINESS WARNS Minimum wage hike will cost WINNIPEG (CP) — Business leaders warn the Manitoba government's decision to give the province the highest minimum wage in Canada may mean lost jobs. Keith Godden, president of the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, said hiking the minimum to $4.30 an hour next Jan. 1 won't solve economic problems. “It makes some people marginally better off at the expense of some people losing their jobs,” said Godden, whose organization wanted a wage freeze until unemploy ment drops and the economy strengthens. He said giving Manitoba the highest level in the country may damage the province's bid for investment from such places as Hong Kong where entrepreneurs weigh wage levels when deciding on relocation. The wisdom of the 30-cent increase was also questioned by Doug Stephen, president of the Manitoba Restaurant and Food Service Association “The immediate response may be cutting staff working hours or cutting staff.” WILL SET PACE Manitoba's current minimum wage is $4 — the same as in Ontario and Quebec — and the increase, which was announced Monday by Labor Minister Mary Beth Dolin, will put Manitoba five cents an hour above the minimum wages im Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories. Dolin said the last increase took effect in July 1982 and the new rate will still leave minimum wage earners struggling to make ends meet. “I am pleased the rate is increased but I am still concerned that for many Manitobans, it will not be enough,” she said. “We're compromising.” John Pullen, president of the Manitoba Federation of Labor, said minimum wage earners desperately need the additiona] 30 cents “to provide them with the basic neces sities.” Pullen said organized labor is happy with the increase but prefers adoption of a formula that would set the minimum at 60 per cent of the average industrial composite wage. If that standard was accepted, Manitoba's minimum wage would have risen to $5.20 an hour Oil price cut eyed OTTAWA (CP) The from its bureaucracy, the federal government is still price would fall by $1.75 considering a price reduction Although OPEC has re forestry and mining to ensure that the economic welfare of its citi- zens does not deteriorate even more in the years ahead, says the B.C.
