Dexters dumps Nakusp JASON KEENAN | Sun Sports Editor sides. Kevin Chaves had all three Dexters’ goals. Rivals aren't supposed to help each other out this way. Castlegar Dexters pulled them- selves out of the West Kootenay Soccer League’s basement this weekend with a 3-1 win over Nakusp. The win kept Nakusp in a fourth-place tie with the Castle- gar Hi-Arrow Devils, who lost 6- 1 to Nelson Savoy. “We worked together as a team, we didn’t bitch at each other, and didn’t bitch at the ref,” said Ed Chaves, the Dexters coach. He said the victory is proof of what he’s known all season long. “When we play soccer, we can win.” He added that the ref called areally good game, equal on both of three red cards in their previous game, the team’s bench depth suffered, but they avoided any further trouble Sun- day, with only one yellow being handed out. They were helped out by a lot of players who were back with the team for the first time season, and a first-time keeper. “Paul Rodrigues played a great game in net. I’m really proud of him.” Dexters play their final match of the regular season Sunday in Nelson against the second-place Heritage Innkeepers. The vic- tory clinched the regular season title for the Savoy. Castlegar was short eight regu- lar players for the game, which they had to start with only nine players. “You cannot go to Nelson with half a team,” said Carlos Amaral, coach of the Devils. “Nelson's on a big field with 11 plus players. What can you do?” Some of the Devils were on the Selkirk College team when they faced Spokane Sunday, while another two or three decid- ed not to show up. “They're hurting the other players on the team because they're going out their and killing See SOCCER 11A JASON KEENAN _ Sun Sports Editor _ “You work on defense.” The senior girls are solid on always The Stanley H ies’ net set ruled the courts at last week- ends’ NRS Invitational volleyball tournament. The senior boys won it all, while the senior girls team fin- ished fourth, losing in the semi- finals. “We managed to pull it off,” said Senior Boys Coach Don Lust. They really pulled it off, going 7-0 in match play, and never losing a game. “The guys just played incredi- ble.” And his compliments went beyond his own team. “Not just our guy, but the guys from L.V. Rogers and Mt. Sentinel as well.” As a kickoff to the West Kootenay season, the tourney is usually a warm-up for the players and coaches. “Usually the calibre of play is Tusty.” But the SHSS had plenty of players from last year’s team who brought the experience that translated in to a solid perfor- mance. “If you compare to last year, they did as well as, if not better, at this tourney as they did at the end of last season.” Lust said that the teams’ blocking and attacks were right on track, and helped the team to their undefeated standing. It was in the finals that the blocking really clicked in. “They [LVR] ‘were having a tough time getting it over the net.” Lust said that three players had a great weekend: Lee Malinek, Dan Kootznetsoff, and Avery Turner. But he didn’t end the compliments there. “Actually the whole team per- formed. Even the rookies with very little court time did really well.” But there's no resting on the laurels for the team. Tomor- iv SHSS_is off to a 40-team tournament hosted by the Univer- sity of British Columbia. With teams from all across the aN the tourney is the place where they stand. “It’s a real good indication of the calibre out in the province;” said Lust. And the work for the team will continue in practices. Despite the solid performance. They stil¥have to work on a few things, including passing. Well trained in the fundamen- tals, the next step in practice is to fine tune plays, and throw in a mix of more complex plays. Tak- ing the game to this higher level is a part of meeting the main game plan of volleyball — confus- ing the opposition. “On attack, the whole idea is'to fake out the other side.” Reading the opponents defense, the goal is to confuse them, and try to have them place only one blocker on one hitter, instead of the usual two blockers. The team lost a tough match to J.L. Crowe from Trail, who will be the girls biggest competition on the quest for provincials at the end of the season. Verigin said the loss may have been the best thing to happen to her team — the girls now know they have to work hard if they want success. Three standout players from the weekend were Shannon Carter with a consistent tourney as middle blocker, Jaclyn Kalesnikoff with her serves, and Melanie Samarodin with her solid serve reception. The girls team is in almost the Opposite position to the boys. The girls have a lot of grade 10 play- ers, and it’s the lack of unit expe- rience that results in some of the team's problems. “It's going to be tough for about three years — by grade 12 we should be phenomenal.” Play- ing together as a unit will build on the friendships that are already there. “That's half the battle in the mental game.” The next action for the girls is this Friday and Saturday at the’ Kootenay Volleyball Classigs, put ; on by Mt. Sentinel school at Selkirk College. Getting their minds in to the game will be the main task at the tourney. “You can have the best skills, ° you can be the best team in the fourney. If their minds are not in: it, they'll lose.” Things are looking up for the SHSS senior boys volley- ball team.
