The focus of the workshop was to discuss ways of moving students from being “externally” motivated (money, marks, praise from teacher/parent), to being “internally” motivated (doing it for themselves). Guest speaker Monte Ferraro, a teacher at SHSS, presented comprehensive written report, which included numerous useful ideas on how. to improve the aca- demic and personal performance of adolescents. Additional copies are available from Ferraro. Ferraro stated that research has shown that the average parent spends less than 10 minutes a day on direct interaction with their children Research has also shown that on the whole students who do best in school have parents/guardians He commended the parents who were present at the meeting for making the effort to attend the workshop.
